What:
Twitter is a social networking website that works a lot like Facebook and
MySpace. This website allows the sending of SMS messages, which are text-based posts
that can be up to 140 characters long. These messages are known short-handedly by
‘tweets’. Twitter is the third largest networking site. It has approximately six million
users and fifty-five million visits per month.

Who:
Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams.
It was started in the March of 2006. It was designed by a podcasting company that also
owned another company known as Odeo. Twitter gained popularity in March of 2007.
Many famous people use Twitter such as: British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, Britney
Spears, Shaquille O’Neal, Miley Cyrus, Ashton Kutcher and Barrack Obama
Twitter has been used as a “social justice tool” to connect those groups of people in
critical situations.

How:
You can make a new account by going to Twitter’s webpage. Once you have
created an account you can use your computer or mobile device to send messages and
blog to other people. Since Twitter is very similar to MySpace and Facebook, it works a
lot like it by being able to blog and send messages to other people and other things of that
aspect.

Risks and Dangers:
Twitter collects what is known as Personally Identifiable Information about its
users. It does not protect this information from third parties, so your information is being
handed out to third party companies that could be using this information for anything that
they want to use it for. Security vulnerability was reported on April 7, 2007. The problem
was started, since it uses SMS messages, someone used a website called
“www.fakemytext.com” to post an inappropriate message on someone’s blog. In January
of 2009, 33 high-profile Twitter accounts were compromised, and falsified messages,
including sexually explicit and drug-related messages, were sent. The accounts were
compromised after a Twitter administrator's password was guessed via a dictionary
attack.

Assignment:
   1. Try this networking website! It is easy to use and you can talk to all your
      friends/colleagues.
