Job Description : SENCO
Responsible to: Headmaster, Director of Studies and Senior Management Team
The key task of a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) is to ensure that the SEN
(Special Educational Needs) provision is both efficiently and effectively managed.
The SENCO with the support of the Headmaster and Director of Studies is responsible for the
day-to-day operation of provision made by the school for pupils with SEN and providing
professional guidance of high quality in the area of SEN that encourages excellent teaching
and the effective use of resources within the specialist SEN and general classroom
environment.
Main Responsibilities
Strategic direction and development of SEN provision
Support individual and class Teaching and learning throughout the school
Manage a team of individual support teachers in a rota of ‘in-class’ and individual
support lessons in conjunction with the Director of Studies.
Liaise with Educational Psychologists and other professional disciplines to provide
the fullest level of support for boys with SEN.
Attend all meetings relevant to the above post, including; Heads of Department,
Staff INSET and assessment progress meetings.
Strategic direction of SEN provision
Ensure effective systems of communication including feedback about pupil’s
learning to inform future planning.
Monitoring the quality of SEN support by establishing effective systems to identify
and meet the needs of pupils whilst ensuring that the systems are coordinated,
evaluated and regularly reviewed.
Ensure that the objectives of the SEN policy are reflected in the school improvement
plan. Liaise with and coordinate the contribution of external agencies.
Up-to-date knowledge of National and local initiatives which may impact upon policy
and practice.
Teaching and learning
Influencing the whole Teaching and learning policy to promote aspects of inclusive
teaching.
Leading INSET where appropriate.
Opportunities to liaise with other preparatory and secondary schools in order to
share best practice.
Collect and interpret specialist assessment data gathered on pupils and use to
inform practice and to disseminate this amongst all relevant staff.
Work with pupils, Heads of Department, class teachers with tutorial/pastoral
responsibilities to ensure that appropriate expectations are set for SEN pupils
Support developments and initiatives to improve standards in literacy and numeracy
as well as access to the wider curriculum
Overseeing and monitoring the quality of IEPs and other relevant information for
subsequent meetings with parents
Develop systems for colleagues to monitor and record progress made by pupils with
SEN towards the achievement of targets set in IEPs
Leading and managing staff
Ensure that systems are in place for the efficient recording and filing of all relevant
paperwork.
Identifying the training needs of staff and organising/coordinating INSET to be
delivered by other professionals.
Disseminate procedural information such as recommendations of the Code of
Practice, or the schools own SEN policy
Ensure that all staff involved in the individual and group support of SEN pupils
contribute to the review of targets of SEN pupils.
Provide regular information to the Headmaster on the evaluation of the
effectiveness of provision for pupils with SEN, to inform decision-making and policy
review
Efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources
Be responsible for liaising with the Director of Studies in timetabling all individual
and group SEN lessons that take account of the main school timetable and make
best use of a pupil’s time.
Manage departmental budget.
Maintain existing resources and investigate opportunities to develop or incorporate
new resources from the wide range available within and externally to the school.
