Lesson 1 Summary: Students will use their senses to observe and describe rock
characteristics using open discovery and directed study. Students will construct
foldables to list major facts about each rock type. Students will use a dichotomous
key to determine rock type.

MATERIALS:
  Day 1:
     1.) Rock Formations Powerpoint presentation – to be provided
     2.) Nasco Rock Study Kits (enough for variety, we have 8) - $12.95 at
         http://www.enasco.com/science/ProductDetail.do?sku=SB39180M
     3.) Scales or Triple Beam Balances (each group of two)
     4.) Rulers (each group of two)
     5.) Magnifying glasses (each group of two)
     6.) Lab notebook (each student)
     7.) Colored pencils (each student)

   Day 2:
      1.) Rock Types Powerpoint presentation – to be provided
      2.) 1 blank sheet of copy paper (each student)
      3.) 1 pair of safety scissors (each student)
      4.) Colored pencils (each student)

   Day 3:
      1.) Various numbered rocks from the Nasco Rock Study Kits
      2.) Scales or Triple Beam Balances (each group of two)
      3.) Rulers (each group of two)
      4.) Magnifying glasses (each group of two)
      5.) Graduated cylinder filled half full of water (each group of two)
      6.) Lab notebook (each student)
