County Cork VEC Appeals: Information for Learners

How can I lodge an appeal?
Each school/centre has an Appeals Contact Person who has all of the information relating
to appeals. An Appeals Application Form can be downloaded from County Cork VEC’s
website or it can be provided by the Appeals Contact Person who will assist you in
completing it. The Appeals Contact Person will process the appeal for you

Does it cost anything to lodge an appeal?
Yes. There is an administrative fee of €30, per appeal lodged. The fee must be paid when
submitting the appeal to the Appeals Contact Person but will be returned to you if the
appeal is successful.

What can I appeal?
A Learner may appeal a result or the assessment process or the assessment process and
result.

Appealing a Result:
A Learner may appeal a result if s/he believes the grade awarded is not representative of
the quality of the work submitted for assessment purposes. The outcome of this type of
appeal is either that the Learner’s grade remains unchanged or is upgraded. The only
evidence which may be presented is that which has already been presented by the
Learner. New evidence may not be added for the appeal.

Appealing the Assessment Process:
A Learner may appeal the assessment process if s/he perceives there to be irregularities/
inequalities in the implementation of the school’s/centre’s assessment process, as
outlined in County Cork VEC’s Quality Assurance policy and related procedures. If the
assessment process is being appealed against, the grounds for appeal should be clearly
stated by the Learner.

Appealing the Assessment Process and Result:
A Learner may appeal against the assessment process and result if the Learner perceives
there to be irregularities/ inequalities in the implementation of the process, as outlined in
County Cork VEC’s Quality Assurance policy and related procedures, which has resulted
in him/her being awarded a grade below that which s/he thinks s/he deserves.

Regardless of the outcome of this type of appeal, the Learner’s portfolio of assessment
can only be graded according to the quality of the evidence contained in it. The Learner
cannot be awarded an upgrade unless the assessment evidence warrants it.

How long do I have to lodge an appeal?
The Appeals Contact Person in the school/college will have information about specific
dates but in general you will have 14 working days from when the school/centre issues
you with your Statement of Results to lodge an appeal, on an Appeals Application Form.
What happens when I lodge an appeal?
The Appeals Contact Persons in each school/centre will identify an Appeals Assessor.
The Appeals Assessor will consider the appeal, review the evidence and come to a
decision which will be communicated to you, in writing, by the school/centre.
