BMR or Basal Metabolic Rate is the base rate at which your body burns calories
for carrying out the body's basic metabolic functions like maintaining internal
temperature, repairing cells, pumping blood, powering muscles at rest, working
of the body's internal organs and so on. It is the rate at which your body burns
calories when at a state of rest. Your body uses energy no matter what you're
doing, even when sleeping. The BMR Calculator will calculate your Basal
Metabolic Rate (BMR), that is, the number of calories your body would consume,
if you stayed in bed the whole day.

As you age, it becomes harder to eat whatever you want and still stay slim; you'll
also learn that your BMR decreases as you age. Hence, depriving yourself of food
in the hope of losing weight also decreases your BMR, making it harder to
compensate and balance calories to achieve your weight loss goals. However, a
regular routine of cardiovascular exercise can increase your BMR, improving your
health and fitness when your body's ability to burn energy gradually slows down.

The BMR formula uses the variables of height, weight, age and gender to
calculate the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This is more accurate than calculating
calorie needs based on body weight alone. This equation will be quite accurate in
all but the very muscular (will underestimate daily calorie requirements) and the
very fat (will over-estimate daily calorie requirements).
