Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Marriage isn’t what it use to be. In one week worth’s of current events, we see the spectrum
of marriage. On one hand, we had the traditional wedding of President Bush’s daughter, Jenna
Bush, to Henry Hager on last Saturday, May 10. On the other hand, on Thursday, May 15, the
California Supreme Court struck down a ban on same-sex marriage, “We therefore conclude that
in view of the substance and significance of the fundamental constitutional right to form a family
relationship, the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil
right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to
opposite-sex couples. " Immediately, in response to this, Ellen DeGeneres announced that she
is going to marry her girlfriend, Portia de Rossi.

God’s picture of marriage is clear in Genesis 2:24-25, “For this reason a man will leave his
father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. The man and his
wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.” The right view of marriage is it between a man
and a woman. In the giving of the Law, God affirmed this in Leviticus 18:22, “(Man) Do not lie
with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.” The same principle applies with a
woman: “(Woman) Do not lie with a woman as one lies with a man; that is detestable.” The
teaching here is that same-sex marriage, lesbianism and homosexuality, is so defiled before God
that the penalty is death. The New Testament clearly affirms this teaching.

What are we to do? As Christians, we are the crossroads. On one hand, we know what our
God teaches us and want us to obey. On the other hand, increasingly, society and the law of the
land, will increasingly affirm the legality of same-sex marriage and allow them to have full rights
and benefits.

First, God wants us to flee from sexual immorality. This is the teaching of 1 Corinthians
6:18. God considers same-sex marriage to be sexual immorality; he teaches us to flee from this.
Why? 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who
is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price.
Therefore honor God with your body.” Our body is precious in God’s eye; therefore, we ought to
flee from same-sex marriage. Not only is it a teaching for us who are adults, it is also for our
children. We need to have that talk with our children at the right time to teach the right view of
marriage and sex, and teach them to flee from sexual immorality.

Second, God wants us to love sinners, but hate their sin. Romans 12:9, “…Hate what is
evil; cling to what is good.” John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave us his one and
only Son…” This is difficult to do. Here are some suggestions:

If you know of someone who is inclined toward same-sex relationships, pray for and with
them that God would take away such a temptation and desire, and he would turn that
person back toward the right view and practice of relationships
When you cast your votes, choose people and policies that affirm the Biblical view of
          marriage and relationships.

Marriage isn’t what it used to be. However, God is God, and he can turn things around!
