Job Description
Job Title: Jr. Support Administrator Job Holder: Vacant

JOB PURPOSE
To assist in the construction, delivery, modification, maintenance and support of a properly engineered
computer environment to meet the defined business, technical and organizational requirements of the
Sister Islands’ Public Sector.
DIMENSIONS
The Government Computer Network in the Sister Islands consists of 7 sites with active network
connections and 8 sites operating as stand-alone. Within theses sites there are approximately 70
PC’s and 4 Servers. Of these the Computer Services Section of District Administration is
directly responsible for providing service to approximately 55 of those PCs and all of the servers.
In addition to the Sections that make up District Administration, the Computer Services section
is also responsible for providing tech support for the Cayman Brac Police Station, the Cayman
Brac School System, Brac Fire Service, Gerrard Smith Airport, Brac Agriculture Department,
Brac Lands Office, Brac Planning Office, Brac Environmental Health Office, Brac Social
Services Office, Brac Health Services, Brac Marine Enforcement Office, Brac Human
Resources, Brac Counseling Centre, Brac Library, Brac Community Development Office and in
some cases Brac Civil Aviation Authority.
The Computer Services Section is responsible for managing all on-island data communications,
together with the Cayman Brac end of the data communications between the Brac and Grand
Cayman.
The Computer Services Section is also responsible for the overall management of the phone
system with in the District Admin. Building and for the coordination of maintenance for all of
the Photo Copy Equipment owned by District Admin.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Time Spent
1. Investigate reported faults in Data Communications and 80%
Information Systems to diagnose the underlying cause, implement
solutions or workarounds and assist users to recover and continue
in operation.
2. Assist in the installation, commissioning, tuning or upgrades for 5%
new or existing software systems, products and utilities including
completion of acceptance procedures and hand over to users
3. Other assignments as deemed necessary by the Sr. Network 15%
Administrator.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Cayman Islands Government Computer network is made up of a complex network of Digital Mini-
Computers, PC Based Servers, PC’s, Printers and associated peripheral equipment. This equipment is
spread over every Government department and almost all Government buildings in Grand Cayman and
Cayman Brac.
The District Administration Computer Services Section is responsible for the deployment, support and
management of all Personal Computers, PC Based Servers and Network Infrastructure located in the
Sister Islands. The team is also called upon to support Oracle based systems as well as some of the
legacy systems, which may be based on Digital VMS platforms.
However, with the increased number of users located in the Sister Islands; the increasing complexity of
the data communications between the Sister Islands and Grand Cayman and the expansion of the PC
networks on the Brac, it is no longer practical or cost-effective to provide the needed support from Grand
Cayman.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
The post-holder should possess an Associates Degree in a computer related field as well as 2 years work
experience. In lieu of an Associates Degree the post holder must possess 5 years of work experience in a
relevant field. The post holder should also possess good communication and interpersonal skills.
The post-holder should be familiar with the following:
Microsoft Operating Systems
Microsoft Office
IP Networks
Windows NT/2000 Server
PC Repair
Experience in the following would be a bonus:
MacAfee Antivirus Products
Microsoft Exchanger Server
ASSIGNMENT AND PLANNING OF WORK
Work is assigned to the post-holder by the Sr. Network Administrator
SUPERVISION OF OTHERS
From time to time the post holder will be required to assist in the supervision of an Intern.
OTHER WORKING RELATIONS
Direct and regular interface with users at all grades throughout Government and Authorities on the Sister
Islands whilst carrying out business or systems analysis, development, support and maintenance.
DECISION MAKING AUTHORITIES
The post holder must consult the Sr. Network Administrator before making a change to systems or
services that is under his control.
The post holder may also be required to act for the Sr. Network Administrator in his absence.
PROBLEMS/KEY ISSUES
Must achieve a high level of knowledge of many different aspects of how the government operates.
Supporting various Government departments represented on the Sister Islands need the ability to quickly
assess and analyze business needs encompassing many disciplines and professional backgrounds. This
requirement is much greater than would be considered normal in most organizations.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal office environment.
In some cases during equipment installations manual labour may be required.
Long and abnormal hours are worked in order to meet tight deadlines and to implement maintenance and
system changes, which must be done outside normal working hours.
Additionally, there is an occasional requirement to provide user support outside normal working hours.
