you can. This article can bring some insight into the
full time job of being a parent.

A great way to build a good relationship with your
child, is by showing interest in his or her day. This can be done by genuinely asking how his or
her day went and then, giving your child your undivided attention. This is a way to learn what
your child's triumphs and disappointments are.

If your child is having trouble with homework, do your best to help them. If you are not able to
help them, talk to the teacher about alternatives. The teacher might be able to provide extra help
or point you in the direction of a great tutor that could help your child with the homework.

Stand your ground when it comes to your child's bedtime. If it's past their bedtime and they're
begging you for just one more TV show or book, stand your ground. An hour less sleep per night
reduces a child's ability to function the next day, affecting their concentration at school.
Teenagers need eight to nine hours of sleep per night, whereas younger school-age children
should get a minimum of ten to twelve hours.

Ensure that your disciplinary actions have the effect you intend by following them up with your
children. Make sure your kids understand why you have taken action, and that they know what
behavior on their part you found unacceptable. This ensures your discipline is effective and can
keep you from having to apply it repeatedly.

When your child's behavior is unacceptable, ensure that the consequences fit, and that they are
immediate. Taking away or granting age-appropriate privileges is a good way to provide rewards
or consequences. Remember, a punishment that is overly harsh may backfire, because your
child loses the motivation to improve his or her behavior. Being too lenient teaches your child
whom you are not serious.

Even when your child has misbehaved and you have administered discipline, make sure he still
knows that you love him. He needs to know the difference between you disapproving of what he
has done, and the fact that you still love him for who he is. This is very important to build the
child's self-esteem and self-worth. You do not want him to feel abandoned just because he did
something wrong and you had to discipline him.

Parenting can be one of life's greatest joys and one of life's greatest stresses. If you are finding
that time outs and other punishments are not working with your young child try saying "The next
time you(fill in the blank) I am going to take away all of your toys." If the child commits the
infraction again, take the toys away. They will earn them back with good behavior, one by one.
They will not forget this punishment and keep it fresh in their minds so all you have to do is
merely threaten it.

If you are taking a trip that will require a plane trip, keep this handy tip in mind. You can easily
strap your child's car seat into the plane seat by getting a lap belt extender from your flight
attendant. It will keep you from having to struggle with the buckle when it is time to remove the
car seat.

Whenever possible, give your young child an opportunity to choose something. For example,
give him two choices of a vegetable for dinner. When he makes a choice, he is less likely to
complain about it. Offering your child choices will give him a sense of control and empowerment
over his own little world.

Use your smart phone as a baby monitor. If you are visiting someone's home or you are on
vacation and do not have your monitor, you can download an application that will let your phone
function as a monitor. If the baby makes a noise, your phone will call a number that you put into
the application.

One problem for children that has been getting a lot of attention lately is bullying. If you are
concerned that your child may one day be a victim of bullying, the best way to prevent that from
happening is to help them develop strong social skills. Bullies, however tough they may act, are
usually intimidated by the thought of approaching someone who has friends to back them up.
Teaching your child how to make friends from an early age can go a long way to avoiding this
problem completely.

Read to your child at least once a day. Children that are exposed to reading in this positive way
will be much more likely to become avid readers themselves. Reading to them several times a
day should be the desired goal but even if you only have time in your busy schedule for a quick
bedtime story it will make a world of difference in how your child regards reading.

Sometimes disagreements are inevitable between you and your partner, but you should never let
these disagreements impact your children. Angry, loud or violent arguments have a very negative
effect on children. They teach your kids that it is okay to express anger violently. Learn to keep
your disagreements civil. This will teach your children that there is a right way to disagree.
