NEW RULES FOR 2007
The number of points in each horse grading band will be extended by 50, except Prelim which will be extended by
12. Points limit for downgraded or imported horses will be adjusted.
PRELIM 49 Points NOVICE 124 Points ELEMENTARY 199 points
MEDIUM 299 points AD MEDIUM 374 Points ADVANCED Open to any horse
RIDER GROUPS – Restricted riders will now be able to gain 14 points at the next highest level before having to ride
in the Open section at their current level, i.e. a Group 7 rider will now be able to gain 14 points at Elementary before
becoming a Group 6 rider and thus having to ride in the Novice Open section.
Any Rider who thinks that this will move them back to a lower group should apply to the British Dressage Office
after 1 December to have their rider group amended. This will NOT happen automatically.
If you have qualified in the season June – November 2007 for your Winter Regionals but from 1 December will
become eligible to revert to a lower rider group, you will still have to ride in the Open Section at the Regionals
A new rider group has been introduced – 2a. 2a will consist of riders who have gained points at Grand Prix or
competed in big or small tour at a UK based CDI. Group 2 riders are those who have gained points at Inter I and II.
New Show Dispensation ruling effective as of 1st January 2008. At the recent Judges Committee
meeting it was agreed that there would be no more Dispensation for a show to use a lower listed Judge than the
level required, unless in extreme circumstances i.e. a Judge is ill before the event or stuck in traffic. If this is the
case the show will be granted Dispensation but if the class is a qualifier then it will be changed to a non qualifier.
It should be noted that List 6 judges can not judge any qualifier and this includes Preliminary.

GREAT SPORT NEEDS GREAT COACHES
The Regional Trainers Club (RTC) for all trainers on the BD database and accredited BE and BSJA trainers aims to
offer great opportunities for trainers to develop their coaching skills. Following the introduction of the UKCC (UK
Coaching Certificate) we aim to provide the training required to attain the necessary skills at each level in order to
achieve the UKCC. Generic levels one and two are up and running. Pilot schemes are being run by BD, BSJA
and BE for Level 3 and once they are complete, training and assessment will be available for level three. Levels
four and five will follow. Even if you choose not to take the UKCC you are continuing professional development
(CPD). As a BD registered trainer you will automatically be included in the RTC. However if you do not wish to be
included and to receive regular mailings/updates, please let the RDO know.

SCOTTISH RIDER DEVELOPMENT GROUP FOR DRESSAGE RIDERS. Funding has been available through
SEA from Sportscotland for Rider Development in all equestrian disciplines and many dressage riders have
benefited from this funding over the years by having training sessions with Ferdi Eilberg. 17 year old Carly Taylor
Smith originally from Peterhead has been selected by the GB selectors to go forward with eleven other English
riders for squad training for potential GB Junior Teams for 2008. Carly is now based as a BD apprentice with
Hannah and Becky Moody in Yorkshire. Alice Page also 17 was chosen with her horse Saygon to attend three
BYRDS National Training weekends which are for riders aiming at GB team selection for 2009.
JO BARRY AND VIVALDI. Jo Barry and Lady Hope’s Vivaldi (Freddie) have had the most fantastic year. Jo and
Freddie won the 5 year old young horse class at the Nationals, beating her trainer Carl Hester in to second place.
They also won the Elementary Open and took 2 place in the Novice Open. Their hard work and dedication has
paid off as they have now been selected from amongst 50 talented young horses at the World Class Potential Elite
Dressage Horse Selection Day at Addington on 9 October. A total of 12 were selected to join the World Class
Dressage Equine Pathway Programme which was launched by the BEF last year to identify and develop horses
with potential to win medals for Britain. Ruth Edge and Shadowfax were also selected.

SCOTTISH SPORTS SCIENCE SEMINAR, Oatridge College – 12 January 2008. This course will cover part of
the UKCC syllabus and will cover Sport psychology with Jennie Killilea and exercise physiology with Andy Thomas.
The seminar is open to coaches/trainers from all equestrian sports and application forms available from Cecilia
Gladwyn, Clochcan House, Auchnagatt, Ellon, AB41 8TD. Spaces will be limited, so please apply in writing as
soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Cost will be £50 and will include lunch and refreshments.
Andy Thomas is an experienced lecturer both at national and international conferences. His particular interest is in
the field of musculoskeletal provision in the equestrian world. Last year he was the physiotherapist to team GBR at
the World Equestrian games across eventing, endurance, show jumping, dressage, carriage driving, reining and
vaulting. Andrew’s particular interest is in identifying rider problems through musculoskeletal screening to identify
imbalances and weaknesses that contribute to common rider errors.
Jennie Killilea is a British Association of Sport & Exercise Scientists (BASES) accredited sport psychologist who
works predominately with the BEF’s World Class Start and Potential scheme. She also works with British Dressage
and the BSJA, helping both coaches and young riders. Jennie regularly contributes to equestrian and professional

clearly marked with the name of the judge, date of competition and venue. The two score sheets must not be
obtained on the same weekend. The final at Rowallan on 21 /22 June will include qualifiers for the Hickstead

16 – 20 April Winter Championships at Hartpury College
AREA FESTIVAL RULES. Several competitors took part in both the Summer Regionals and Area Festivals. Rule
143 b) iii) (2008 rule book) states “Combinations competing at Winter/Summer Regional Championships will not be
eligible for any Area Festivals at that level or below in the same calendar year with the exception of Freestyle to
Music classes when they will only loose their eligibility to compete in Area Festivals if they compete at the Winter
Championships or Wellington Championships.” Please note amended Area Festival Rules for 2008
Once a rider has ridden at the National or Winter Championships, they cannot compete at that level or
below on another horse in Area Festivals in that year or the following year.
Qualification from Preliminary to Elementary levels will be by achieving 2 affiliated scores at 62% and over
at the same level. Medium to PSG remains at 60%.
PLEASE NOTE: An error has been made in the 2008 rule book as it states that Scottish competitors only require to
send one affiliated score sheet. THIS IS WRONG – you still require to send two affiliated score sheets.
