                                      ||              ₃                           ₃                            : -           ₃                                                    ||

     The following is a rare description of Mahatmya cum prayer of Sri Ganga by Lord
Rama as told to Vanaras in Kishkindha. This appears in Brahma Purana, Chapter 157 titled
Gautami Mahatmya in Tirtha Mahatmya. An excerpt of the hymn is given below:
       “Vanara Gana! Only because of this great Mahanadi, my father (Dasharatha) got
absolved of all his sins and reached Svarga. She is the mother of all beings who is capable of
bestowing Bhukti and Mukti and destroying the most heinous crimes/sins. There is no river
on earth which is equivalent to Ganga. Because of her grace, all sins have been repeatedly
destroyed, enemies have become friends, friendship of Vibhishana was attained, Sita was
attained, help of Hanuman was attained, and Lanka and the Rakshasas were destroyed.
Only by praying Sri Ganga, Sri Gautama became great sage and Lord Shiva attained her in
His Jata. Sri Ganga is capable of fulfilling all wishes and nullifying all inauspiciousness. We
are thus having the darshan (vision) of this great river and I submit my body, mind and
speech unto her constantly.
