Background of Reacher

• Extends length of natural reach
• Trigger actuation
• Naturally open grippers
Problem Statement
Target consumer group: elderly people with limited range
of motion and strength.

Target use, based on potential user input: Retrieval of
dropped everyday objects including but not limited to
eyeglasses, cordless telephone, television remote,
silverware, and articles of clothing

Design Criteria:
• Locking mechanism
• Stability
• Comfort
• Ease of use (input force, hand placement)

Weight analysis: Calculated using volume and density
Prototype: Approx 2.3 lbs - heavy
Final Design (al): Approx 1.4 lbs - reduced wall thickness
Final Design (ABS plastic): < 1 lb

Deflection Analysis: Calculated by modeling as a simple
cantilever beam
Deflection at the end of the device while grasping a 2 lb
object was determined to be negligible, <0.01 in

Fatigue Analysis: Device was determined to function for
essentially unlimited uses.

Force Analysis: Device requires at most 1:1 input vs grasping
force ratio.
