AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSION AND NATIONAL SPORTS
LAUNCH SPORTS TRAINING WORKSHOP
Koforidua, 21st March 2011 - The Australian High Commission and the National
Sports Council have begun a five-day training workshop for sports administrators,
referees and trainers in the eastern regional capital, Koforidua.
The program, which is the fifth in the series of a National Sports Council project to
raise talent and awareness for the lesser known sports such as Athletics, Boxing,
Volleyball, Table Tennis and Handball, started in 2008.
About 100 people will benefit from the program to be trained as coaches, referees and
sports administrators. Ultimately about one million young people will benefit from
improved physical education programmes in selected districts and communities.
Australia, through its Sports Outreach Program launched in 2005 to assist
predominantly Commonwealth countries in improving their sporting capabilities, has
currently spent about AUD 53,000, an equivalent of 79,403 Ghanaian Cedis, has been
expended on the program.
“The Australian Sports Outreach Program aims to enhance the capacity of local sports
administrators, improve popular participation in sports, and promote a healthy active
lifestyle among the population of those countries benefiting. We are pleased to be
partnering the National Sports Council in Ghana to achieve these objectives,” said
Third Secretary at the Australian High Commission, Mr Ian Gould, who represented
the High Commissioner at the launch
Last year, The Australian Sports Outreach Program also awarded the Ghana Hockey
Association AUD15, 000 (close to GHC20, 000) to support training programs for girls
and young women, and to identify talent in that sport. Sierra Leone is another West
African country that is currently benefiting from the Sports Outreach Program support.
