Interested In Teaching English Overseas? Don't Fall For
These Myths!
If you're planning on moving overseas and teaching English to local residents, you've likely been
met with a mixture of 'Oh, what an amazing adventure!' and 'Aren't you nervous?' Don't listen to
the naysayers regarding moving overseas to teach English -- instead, realize that many of their
concerns are based on complete myths! Although the specifics can vary from location to location,
here are some of the most common myths about teaching English abroad.
Myth #1: Teaching English Overseas Is Dangerous
This is one of the biggest myths regarding teaching English overseas. Sure, there are some
volatile parts of the world, but for the most part, moving to teach is a safe and rewarding
experience. Anyone can be a victim of a crime in any country, so teachers should take necessary
precautions that they would take anywhere else in the world. For both men and women, this
means travelling in groups until they become more knowledgeable about their local areas, locking
doors, staying out of potentially unsafe situations and other common sense safety precautions.
Myth #2: It's Easier To Find A Job When You're In The Local Country
While it's true that some people have success finding a job when they're in their new country, for
many others it's a difficult process. Many countries have strict requirements for foreigners who
want to work while visiting and may deny an entrance visa to anyone without a job lined up. This
means that any work done without a visa needs to be done illegally and payments made 'under
the table.' Instead, consider contacting a company that helps Westerners find jobs teaching
English overseas. They'll make sure you have all your entry requirements lined up and will help
you find a job -- legally.
Myth #3: You Need To Know The Local Language
It certainly can't hurt if you know a few key words or phrases in your new language, but it's not
necessary. Many people who move overseas to teach English find that it's easy to pick up the
local language from their students and other locals that they interact with during their everyday
life. From the clerk at the grocery store to the shop owner in the local market, you'll be given the
opportunity to learn a new language at every step. However, teachers who strictly limit their
interaction with other teachers will be missing out on a huge opportunity to pick up another
language. It's natural to want to spend time with other Westerners, but don't limit yourself or you
might be missing out on some once in a lifetime experiences.
Don't fall for these myths! Moving abroad is an incredibly rewarding experience and isn't one that
many people get the chance to have. If you're lucky enough to get the opportunity to live in
another country for a year or more to teach, jump at it! You'll end up having an experience and
new friends that you'll remember for the rest of your life.
