Ethics is a branch of Philosophy.
Philosophy was the love of wisdom
, and philosophers were people
who spent their lives attempting to
A person who was wise was as close
to happiness as he or she could be .
Dr.Khaled Qutb 4
Ethics is a branch of philosophy that studies
beliefs about right and wrong, good and evil.
These beliefs are basic because they determine the
truth or falsity of other beliefs.
If you believe, for example, that the right thing to
do is whatever is good for you , then your moral
life will be very different from that of someone
who believes that we ought to be concerned with
the good of others as well.
Dr.Khaled Qutb 5
There are many different ideas about right and
wrong, good and evil. In studying ethics, we try to
discover the best set of moral basic beliefs we can,
so that we can use them to make moral decisions
throughout our lives.
Ethics means also:
The science of human duties of all kinds
including moral ,law and political duties.
The study or science of morals.
Dr.Khaled Qutb 6
In modern times Ethics
has two different meanings:
First, it can mean the study of
theories about the intellectual origins
and justification of moral codes and
morality in general.
Second, it can mean the
particular codes of conduct
adopted by individuals or
Dr.Khaled Qutb 7
The term “morality” can be used
to refer to a code of
conduct put forward by a society or,
some other group, such as a religion,
or accepted by an individual for her
own behavior. Or
Dr.Khaled Qutb 8
Normatively to refer to a code of conduct
that, given specified conditions, would be
put forward by all rational persons.
Etiquette is sometimes included as a part
of morality, but it applies to norms that are
considered less serious than the kinds of
norms for behavior that are part of
Dr.Khaled Qutb 9
When we speak of people as moral or ethical, we
usually mean that they are good people, and when
we speak of them as immoral or unethical, we mean
that are bad people.
The important thing to remember here is that
moral, ethics, immoral, and unethical, essentially
mean good, right, bad, and wrong, often depending
on whether one is referring to people themselves or
to their actions.
Dr.Khaled Qutb 10
Moral philosophy is the area of philosophy
concerned with theories of ethics, with how
we ought to live our lives.
It is divided into three areas:
Dr.Khaled Qutb 11
Meta-ethicsis the most abstract area of
moral philosophy. It deals with
questions about the nature of morality,
about what morality is and what moral
language means. (for example, what we
mean when we use the word "good").
Dr.Khaled Qutb 12
While meta-ethics treats the most abstract
questions of moral philosophy, normative
ethics is more concerned with providing a
moral framework that can be used in order
to work out what kinds of action are good
and bad, right and wrong.
Dr.Khaled Qutb 13
The most down to earth area of moral philosophy
is applied ethics. This seeks to apply normative
ethical theories to specific cases to tell us what is
right and what is wrong. In this section, various
ethical issues are discussed: e.g.
workers rights (Child labor)
Dr.Khaled Qutb 14
concerns the moral issues that arise because of the
specialist knowledge that professionals attain, and how the
use of this knowledge should be governed when providing
a service to the public .
Professional Ethics concerns one's conduct of behavior and
practice when carrying out professional work.
The concept of professional ethics tells us what a
professional should or should not do in the work place.
Professional ethics gives a broad sense of direction-makes
Professional ethics is a simple set of rules, but a
comprehensive educational guide.
Dr.Khaled Qutb 15
