									16. CLOTHING AND FASHION
 Móda a jej vývin, Výber oblečenia, Odev a doplnky na rôzne príležitosti
 Súčasné módne trendy, značkový tovar, Posudzovanie ľudí podľa oblečenia

We wear clothes to alter our appearance or to keep warm and protected. For sport we wear sport kit. When we do not have
anything on we are naked. Nakedness is natural for small babies. Some people walk in their house in the nude. A nudist is
someone who likes being naked. Bare hands and feet are without gloves and socks. Clothes should never reveal more than is polite
and appropriate. Usually we are dressed in clothes that fit the occasion. We dress for parties or to work in the garden. A set of
clothes we wear is an outfit. We dress up for special occasions. Children dress up for parties and wear a fancy dress or a disguise. If
we are dressed to smartly or formally, we are overdressed. In the morning we get dressed and before a shower we get undressed.
We take our clothes off or strip or we put something on. We change into different clothes all the time. We try on new clothes in a
changing room. We do up or fasten our clothes with buttons, zips or safety pins. We zip up our jeans and button up our shirts.
Sometimes we put on clothes wrongly – back to front or inside out. We wear odd socks when they do not match.
Costumes are worn by actors or traditional dancers. On our upper part of body we wear sleeveless, long or short-sleeved shirts,
blouses, T-shirts, sweaters, pullovers, jumpers, cardigans or sweatshirts. Shirts are worn by men, blouses by women and they
have collars. You put sweaters, pullovers and jumpers over head but you button up cardigans. A jacket with a skirt or trousers
makes up a suit. They can be accompanied by a tie or a bowtie. Suits and evening dresses are formal clothing. Skirts worn by men
are called kilt. Short trousers are called shorts. Trousers can be jeans, tracksuits bottoms and held by belts or braces. They usually
have pockets. Women wear dresses of many different kinds. Coats keep us warm in winter. Raincoats are waterproof and anoraks
usually do not have hoods. Sportswear is for example a football dress or a jogging suit. There are many accessories that worn or
carried. Belts, gloves, mittens, hats, wrist watches, umbrellas, sunglasses, handbags, shoulder-bags and jewellery are inseparable
part or our outfits. We cover our heads by woolly hats, caps, headscarf, straw hats, top hats, baseball caps or helmets. Jewellery
includes earrings, rings, brooches, bracelets and necklaces. They are made of silver, gold and jewels. A pair of glasses consist of a
frame and lenses. Sunglasses protect our eyes from the sunshine and goggles from water, wind or dust. We can by glasses at the
optician’s. Some people wear contact lenses instead. Underwear must be changed more often than the rest of our clothes.
Underpants include pants, briefs, knickers, panties and boxer shorts. Women also wear bras, tights and stockings. Pyjamas have
pyjama top and trousers. Women wear nightdress or nightie for sleeping. Dressing gown or bathrobes are worn after a bath. For
swimming we use swimming costume or trunks.
Pairs of shoes are probably the most used part of clothing. Footwear is important for our comfort and safety. A shoe has a heel,
shoelace, sole sometimes a buckle. Trainers are for sport, shoes are for everyday use, boots are above ankles for colder weather,
slippers are for home use, sandals and slip-on shoes for summer and gym shoes for inside sport. Shoes can be made of leather. We
put on and take off our shoes which means we are barefoot. Shoes made by shoemakers can be bought at a shoe shop. They must
be our size so they fit. We must take good care of our shoes by cleaning them, brushing and polishing them or taking them to a shoe
repair shop.
We spend most or our time in working clothes. We wear uniforms, protective clothing, aprons and overalls. We buy clothes in
clothes shops or boutiques. They must be the right size so they fit us. They should not be too tight or loose. Children can grow into
clothes. The colour and material should match and go with the rest of what we want to wear. Some clothes really suit us and make us
look good. Some people dress well, some badly, sometimes casually or formally, some smart or scruffy, others elegant and
fashionable. Old clothes are shabby and worn. We take care of our clothes too. They hand on a hanger or we fold them and put in the
wardrobe or a chest of drawers, we wash them, iron them, brush them and repair them. We must follow the instructions on the
labels. Sometimes they must be washed by hand, be dry cleaned. Clothes can shrink and some stains need stain removers. Clothes
of different colours must be washed separately. White ones can be bleached. Local laundrette can help us if uncertain. Clothes are
made of different materials, also called fabric, produced by textile industry. Natural fabrics are for example silk, cotton and wool
but synthetic are stronger. Woollen jumpers are warm. One of the most expensive materials is cashmere. Polyester and nylon are
man-made materials. Cloth can have different colours and patterns. The most used are floral, striped, check, spotted or tartan
patterns. Cloth can be soft, rough or elastic. A person who makes clothes is a dressmaker, a tailor or dress designer. They take the
measurements of our height, waist, hips and sleeves and sew for us.
Different age groups consider different clothes appropriate for their age. Everyone has a unique style and taste and responds to
fashion individually. There are trends that try to tell us what is fashionable and what is out of fashion. A hairstyle can catch on and
then become old-fashioned. What was not acceptable in the past is hot now. Women wearing trousers, short skirts and high-heeled
shoes are examples of this. Stylish, trendy and fashionable clothes are more expensive. Models walk on catwalks and show us the
latest pieces by well-known designers during fashion shows. Women like to watch them and follow new fashion trends but can
rarely afford to buy the extravagant ones. Some people spend fortune on brand name clothes. Most people, however, wait for sales
or have their clothes made. Choosing clothes has also something to do with our self-expression. It can express our personality,
mood, attitudes or interests. Warm and cold colours have both symbolic meanings in many cultures. Some colours are thought to be
girlish. Blue for boys and pink for girls. Clothes not only protect us from weather elements but in hot weather should be breathable,
absorb sweat and not cause allergic reaction. Clothes can also visually change the shape of our body. People protecting animal
rights are against killing animals to provide fur for coats.
Hair and hairstyle is inseparable part of our appearance. Men grow beard, moustache, and sideboards or are clean-shaven. We can
have straight, wavy or curly hair. Colour of hair can be fair, dark, blond, brunette, ginger or red. Men usually keep short hair and
women medium length or long. Hairdressers and barbers take care of our hair. Different cuts and haircuts catch on but the hair
grows and can be rearranged. Girls like wearing tied hair, plaits, ponytails and ribbons, hair-slides or hairpins in their hair.
Fashion is a term commonly used to describe a style of clothing worn by most of people. A fashion usually remains popular for about
1-3 years and then is replaced by yet another fashion. Even though there are a lot of changes in fashion, many people do not easily
except the changes. It is because each person has own style and taste. Some people don’t care what they wear, others, especially
women are very choosy and like to spend a lot of money on clothes. We classify fashion into 3 main categories: women´s, men´s and
children´s fashion. It has become large business. More people are involved in the buying, selling and production of clothing than any
other business in the world. We are constantly being bombarded with new fashion ideas from music, videos, books, and television.
Movies also have a big impact on what people wear. Musicians and other cultural icons have always influenced what we're wearing.
Fashion concerns not only clothes but also hairstyle, shoes and accessories.

Clothing is made out of all types of material such as cotton, rayon, spandex, and polyester, and they are just a few used. Some
clothing may even be made of 2 or more different types, this is known as " Blending." Functionality is the primary purpose of
clothing. It can serve as a protector from the elements . Clothes also enhance safety during hazardous activities by providing a barrier
between the skin and the environment. Further, clothes provide a hygienic barrier, keeping toxins away from the body and limiting the
transmission of germs.

It is not certain when people first started wearing clothes however, anthropologists give estimates that range between 100,000 to
500,000 years ago. The first clothes were made from natural elements: animal skin and furs, grasses and leaves, and bones and shells.
Clothing was often draped or tied however, simple needles made out of animal bone provide evidence of sewn leather and fur
garments from at least 30,000 years ago.

The 1920s is the decade in which fashion entered the modern era. It was the decade in which women first liberated themselves from
constricting fashions and began to wear more comfortable clothes (such as short skirts or trousers). Men likewise abandoned overly
formal clothes and began to wear sport clothes for the first time. The suits men wear today are still based, for the most part, on those
men wore in the early 1920s.

The 1960s featured a number of diverse trends. It was a decade that broke many fashion traditions, mirroring social movements
during the period. In the middle of the decade, culottes, box-shaped PVC dresses and go-go boots were in. The widely popular bikini
came into fashion in 1963 after being featured in the musical Beach Party.

The 1970s fashion, which began with a continuation of the miniskirts, bell-bottoms and hippie look from the late 1960s, was soon
sharply characterized as popular culture. These include platform shoes which were worn by both men and women. Wide-legged,
flared jeans and trousers were another fashion mainstay for both sexes throughout most of the decade.

While in the 1970s, the silhouette of fashion tended to be characterized by close fitting clothes on top with wider, looser clothes on the
bottom, this trend completely reversed itself in the early 1980s as both men and women began to wear looser shirts and tight, close-
fitting pants. Men wore power suits as a result of the greater tendency for people to display their wealth. Brand names became
increasingly important in this decade, making Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein household names.

Most of the fashion trends of the 1990s are based around blue jeans and the T-shirt. Tattoos and body piercings also began to become
popular, and still are continuing in popularity for some people as of 2011. The '90s began the anti-fashion, "anything goes" trend that
has continued to the latter parts of the 2000s.

The 2000s are often described as a "mash-up" decade. For the most part, the decade did not have one particular style but rather a
recycling of styles from past decades.

Fashion has become an art, a way of life, a way of expressing ones self. Who doesn’t pay attention to fashion these days? Whether
designer, model, photographer, apparel manufacturer, clothing retailer, boutique owner or just consumer of these precious items, we
can’t turn our back to the fact that everything is touched by fashion. Hippies dress a certain way, rockers - another way, gangsters - a
third... yuppies, stars, policemen, athletes, prisoners, dogs (yes, dogs too) - everyone dresses with a style which gives expression
to their social status, their heritage, their ideas - what they are fighting against, what they hate, what they love, what they strive for.
Nowadays fashion is a fetish. The collections in Paris, New York and Milan, and now London, typically set the stage for the industry
one year in advance.
But it seems we have forgotten the main purpose of all garments - to keep us warm, to protect us from bad weather, to be comfortable,
to be stylish, to make us look good. On the other hand, machines flood the world with nondescript garments.

Fashion can create problems when people are judged according to the clothes they are wearing. It shows their wealth, opinions but
also their socializing. We can constantly hear about conflict between groups of different opinion on politics or music. Vary numerous
fights including fascists, antifascist, neo-Nazis, skinheads, punkers, rappers... All of them have very peculiar styles.
Picking Outfits for Different Occasions
While choosing an outfit for a really important event, such as a wedding or job interview, takes time and preparation, your choice is
simplified by being aware of the formality of the occasion. Some events, however, sit firmly on the borderline between formal and
informal, making it difficult for you to know what to wear.
Whether you like it or not, what you wear says a lot about you. And if you want to make the right impression, you need to dress for
the occasion. There are numerous occasion wear outfits available that not only highlights are good points, but help you make a good
impression as well. Knowing the right kind of clothes will make you comfortable, confident, at ease with everybody, and sure of
yourself. You will be admired and sometimes imitated.
Here are some tips on what to wear and what to avoid for four different occasions:

First date
What you wear on a first date depends on a few things. Remember, how you dress on a first date makes a statement about who you
are, and first impressions always count. You want to emphasise your personality to your date, but you also don’t want to reveal too
much. You want to dress to impress, not scare away.
First dates are not the place to make bold fashion statements. Consider these questions when preparing for a first date:
* Where are you going?
* What time of day is it going to be?
* Is it formal or casual?
* What season is it?
What to wear:
* Wear something comfortable and venue and age appropriate
* Keep jewellery to a minimum – you don’t want to seem too flashy or cheap
* Minimal make up always makes the right impression – it shows that you are comfortable with your looks and approachable
* Go easy on the perfume
* Don’t try too hard – wearing the latest, most trendy fashion styles will do nothing to impress your potential suitor
Job interview
When it comes to going for a job interview, many people underestimate the power of first impressions. This is a potential employer,
so you want to make the best impression. Besides your glowing CV, your employer will notice your clothing and make his decision
on how you present yourself. Regardless of the position you are applying for, you need to look professional.
Professional/office position:
If you are applying for an office position, you should be dressed in a suit with a coordinated long-sleeved shirt or blouse, conservative
shoes, and decent hairstyle and limited jewellery, make-up and perfume.
Non-professional job:
This includes jobs in a store or in a restaurant. Business attire is usually appropriate here as well, although not as formal. Regardless,
you still need to be neat, well-groomed and presentable to impress your potential employee.
What not to wear:
* Flip flops, shorts, jeans
* Underwear that is visible
* Skirts that are too short
* Pants that are too low or too tight
* Blouses that are to low cut or too short
Dinner Party
Being a guest at a dinner party's all about being as gracious as possible to the people who invited you - and that means not trying to
outshine your hostess in the fashion stakes. Stick to a palette of plain, dark neutrals that'll make you look classy and sophisticated
without screaming for attention.
Wide-legged trousers are the ideal basis for a dinner-party outfit, as they're flattering to all figure types as well as being comfortable to
sit and stand in. A longer-length top will also cover any bulges that appear after you've eaten, but make sure it's fitted at the waist so
the outfit doesn't look shapeless.

'Informal' Socialising
The phrase 'Oh, it's going to be very relaxed, just a few friends' is no excuse for dressing sloppily at a barbecue or cheese and wine
evening. Even if you know everybody at the event, they'll want to see you've made an effort to look good when your hosts have taken
the trouble to hold a party.
Non-scruffy jeans (no holes or stains) are perfectly acceptable and will ensure you're comfy. Add glamour with an elegant top.
Heels look overdone with informal clothing, so pick out your favourite ballet pumps or embellished flip-flops for a relaxed-but-smart
look. Jewellery should be kept to a minimum.

Wedding
Why do we dress up for birthday parties, holiday dinners, and graduations?
These are special events, so we dress accordingly, in clothes that differ from our everyday clothes. The same holds true for weddings.
The wedding is an extremely special event to the couple and their loved ones. Dress to respect that fact and to celebrate their union.
Even if you are not close to the couple, it is important that your attire not negatively affect the atmosphere of their celebration.

Guests
Often, the couple will indicate a style of dress on the invitation. Here are some common, modern phrases that one might find on an
invitation:

Casual Attire
"Casual attire" is perhaps the most confusing of all dress indicators. To some people, casual means shorts and flip-flops; to others, it is
a sport coat and slacks. When in doubt as to what exactly is meant by casual for this particular wedding, ask the couple or someone
assisting with the wedding planning. It is always better to err on the side of overdressing. Therefore, when an invitation states "Casual
Attire," do not just show up in the same clothes that you might wear to a baseball game or for running errands on a Sunday afternoon.
For men, slacks or khaki pants and dress shirts with or without ties are suitable. A woman could wear a skirt or slacks with a blouse or
a casual dress; avoid everything that looks too glitzy.

Theme or Theme Optional
When a couple is planning a theme wedding, such as a Renaissance event or a masquerade ball, often they will indicate whether
guests should come dressed a certain way. Typically this is optional, especially for elaborate themes where the guest would have to
spend a great deal of time and money to procure the right outfit. When in doubt, ask the couple or someone assisting in planning the
wedding.

Cocktail Attire
When an invitation states "Cocktail Attire," guests should dress to look chic and elegant, but not quite formal. For women, cocktail
dresses, high heels, and evening bags are appropriate; men should wear dark suits (but not tuxedos).

Black Tie Optional
"Black Tie Optional" means that male guests may choose to wear tuxedos and female guests may wear evening gowns, but this is not
required. However, this does not mean that one may arrive casually dressed to a "Black Tie Optional" wedding. Guests who choose to
not wear full black tie should dress as formally as possible - for men, that means dark suits, and for women, that means at least
cocktail-length dresses.

Black Tie
When an invitation states "Black Tie," there's no way around it: this wedding is a formal affair. Women should plan to wear long
evening dresses and heels; men should wear tuxedos.

Finally, wedding guests and participants, take note that this wedding does not exist for you to be the center of attention. By all means,
express yourself with your attire, but follow any style indications given by the couple, as well as general guidelines for taste and
courtesy. Remember, a wedding is the couple's time to shine!

Some types of dresses for different activities:

School clothes or uniform should be simple, washable, colourfast and durable. They should be made of slightly thick material,
absorbent and easy to launder. And most of all should be comfortable to the body. School uniforms are the most widely used dress
amongst children out the house; it is therefore a very good practice of keeping them clean and neat so that they will last for the school
year.

Sunday clothes are usually more elaborate than school clothes. Colours are usually brighter and more delicate. They can be made of
light materials, colourful, attractive and with trimmings.

Sportswear. Clothes worn in games and plays are called sportswear. This can be flattering to the figure yet modest and comfortable.
They should be of colourfast fabrics, with firm quality and easy to wash.
House dress and sleeping garments should be loose, comfortable, cool, and simple in style. They should be made of cotton
materials. Cotton materials are cool and easy to launder. Out-of-style or faded dress may be remodelled and loosened for a house
dress.

How to Choose Clothes That Fit Your Style

So you've got nothing to wear that suits you? Out of your own typical designed style? Nothing cool to wear? So, want to fit in with
the rest of the crowd? Clothes are nothing more than a simple material of cloth to warm you up, and cover you so you are not in the
nude. But wearing cruddy clothes don't fit in with the style the rest of the 'crowd' likes. And wearing goofy clothes will make you look
silly, even in front of your loved one(s). So selecting the right clothes for occasions like proms, parties, funerals, and the others really
are important, right?
Choose a style that fits you, and here are the instructions for doing that.

1. Browse online for clothes that are your age and appropriate. Once you've done that, look through the clothing and match it with
other online clothing stores and see if it looks good.
2. Think about accessories. Wristbands, bracelets, earrings, necklaces etc. and make-up. 'Should I put on a little more eye-liner?'
'Does this purse look cute with this scarf'? Ask yourself these questions. They really do help.
3. Clothes can make you who you are. You may have already found your style or 'Label'.
4. When people come up to you and ask you what your label is, just say. You should be pretty happy with what you do and how you
   dress.

Tips
 Don't pretend that your something you are not just to impress others! Reflect your personality!
 Be who you want to be!
 Remember you weren't born as a prep or a skater or an emo!
