        What Is Impacted Tooth?
 An impacted tooth is a tooth that fails to emerge or emerges only partially
through the gums.
 The most common teeth to become impacted are the wisdom teeth (the
third molars).
 They are the last teeth to emerge usually between the age of 17 and 21.
 Impacted wisdom teeth are very common. They often push on the next
tooth causing mal-alignment of the bite.
 They could be responsible for causing a “hit and slide” movement of the
lower jaw due to their premature contact by virtue of their emerging position.
This can further cause joint problems manifested as pain in jaw muscles,
headaches, neck muscle stiffness etc.
 A partially emerged tooth can trap food, plaque and other debris in the soft
tissue around it, leading to inflammation and tenderness of the gums and
unpleasant odor. This area being difficult to clean can cause prolonged food
lodgment and eventually cause decay (cavity) of the third molar and also the
second molar.

      Treatment of Impacted Tooth
1. Removal of the tooth (extraction)is the usual treatment for an impacted tooth. This
is done in the dentist’s office. Antibiotics may be prescribed before the extraction if
the tooth is infected.

2. Over the counter pain relivers may be helpful if the tooth causes discomfort.warm
salt water or over the counter mouthwashes may be soothing to the gums. However
they will only provide temporary relief. It is important to visit the Dentist for the right
course of treatment.

3. No treatment may be needed if the impacted tooth is not causing any problems.
