Developed idea 1:
Objective: To develop ideas into
detailed solutions to the brief.
1. Pick an idea to develop:
1. Explain why you have chosen this idea (say why it
matches your specification).
Develop the idea:
• Pick your best idea and draw it with more detail.
– Use labels to explain key features.
– Show how it is constructed
– Use several views or exploded drawings to show detail.
• You need to include:
– what materials will need to be used (or properties)
– What else you need to find out or try to develop the
idea. This could include things to find, models you need
to make, tests you need to do etc.
AQA Design and Technology (Product Design) GCSE – 2011 Examination Sheet 10
Developed idea 2:
Objective: To develop ideas into
detailed solutions to the brief.
– Now select a second idea to develop
from your ideas sheet. And repeat the
last task.
– Remember: include notes to say what
questions you may need to answer to
develop the design. “What materials
could I use etc.”
– Check that you show how the idea could
work. Even if you have some parts still to
work out. Make notes to say what you
need to find out.
AQA Design and Technology (Product Design) GCSE – 2011 Examination Sheet 11
Selecting materials:
• Objective: To find out and show what
materials could be used for my design.
• Now that you know what your design may be
like we can find out what materials could be
used.
• Look at the range of example materials.
Select those that could be used and say why
they are suitable for your design. Use photos
of the material to show what you mean.
• You may need to research a range of different
materials to allow you to select which developed
idea to use.
• Remember – Different materials are available in a range
of shapes and sizes.
AQA Design and Technology (Product Design) GCSE – 2011 Examination Sheet 12
Final idea development:
Objective: To show a design that can be produced and how it
can be made.
– Select the best design (matching specification) and using the materials
research you have done show how the design works.
– You will need to show –
• Details of construction
• Details of the materials
• Sizes and how things fit together
Top marks = “Development of ideas using further research. “
AQA Design and Technology (Product Design) GCSE – 2011 Examination Sheet 13

Task:
• Model your idea in cheap, easy to use materials (Lego, card, MDF). The model
should show how the parts fit together and may only show a part you need to work
out.
• Photograph it and explain what you have found out from the model. It may be you
have changed how it fits together, how to make parts, sizes etc. “From my
modelling I have found out….”
AQA Design and Technology (Product Design) GCSE – 2009 exam Sheet 14
Testing:
Objective: To show how the design can be made with the
available materials and processes.
Task:
• Decide what things you need to try out to decide your
final design. For example what types of bulb could I
use?, How can I fasten 2 parts together?
• Describe the tests you carried out (with pictures) and
explain what you learnt.
“To develop my design I have tested….”
“From my testing I have found out….”
