Riddings Infant and Nursery School
Gifted and Talented Policy
Riddings Infant & Nursery School
Our goal is …
“to constantly evaluate and improve the life of the learner at Riddings
Infant and Nursery School”
General aims
1 to identify our most able children who show strengths in particular areas of the
curriculum
2 to enable our most able children to fulfil their potential through a broad and
balanced curriculum and challenging activities.
General rationale
At Riddings Infants we aim to maximise the potential of all our children through a
broad and balanced curriculum but we realise that our gifted and talented pupils have
particular needs which we have a responsibility to meet if they are to realise their
potential. The work which they undertake will challenge and extend their thinking to
greater levels and allow them to improve their skills.
Definitions
Gifted
Pupils who have demonstrated achievement or the potential to achieve at the highest
levels in comparison with other children in our school in either Maths or Literacy
Talented
Pupils who have demonstrated achievement or the potential to achieve at the highest
levels in comparison with other children in our school in one of the foundation
subjects within the national curriculum.

Identification
In drawing up an official school central register of gifted and talented pupils (between
5-10% of whole population) the following has to be borne in mind:
- Identification is inclusive rather than exclusive and a pupil will only be
registered if there is clear evidence of ability.
- The school register will be comprised of between 5% and 10% of those
on role and will comprise children from Year 1 and Year 2.
- At least two thirds of those pupils on the register will be identified as
“gifted”.
- Vigilance is required to ensure that more able pupils who are under
achieving pupils are identified for inclusion on the school register.
- In each year group a small shadow group of pupils will be identified in
each subject area and will wherever possible have access to similar
activities as appropriate.
- There will be no bias with regard to gender, ethnicity or home
background.
Process of identification
Teacher assessment scores
Teacher judgement
Standardised test scores
The information is collated by the G and T Coordinator and the official register
will be drawn up in consultation with the Head and all Staff. Each class teacher
will keep a record of the school’s official G and T register and of the shadow
groups within their own class.
A twice yearly review will facilitate monitoring and evaluation of placement on
the register and attendant provision.

Provision
An action plan for each half term will be drawn up in each subject outlining the
provision that the gifted and talented children are receiving. Some of this might
include out of class activities but often it will be class based all class teachers
providing for their most able.
In class
Differentiated activities
Higher order questioning to develop higher order thinking skills
Increased opportunities for problem solving
Opportunities to take risks and sometimes ”fail”.
Varied and flexible groupings within classes
Visits to school by experts
Out of class
We aim to provide:
Opportunities for extra curricula activities
Access to special events
Cluster activities
Access to LEA activities if appropriate
Master classes and summer schools
Joint activities with the local community
Appropriate pastoral care, counselling and mentoring
External training for teachers

Monitoring and evaluation
Policies and procedures will be monitored and evaluated on a regular basis, to inform
future planning and action that will lead to even more effective provision.
At the end of each term the G and T Coordinator in conjunction with the Head and
class teachers will discuss progress, self-esteem, motivation and review targets.
Informing parents
The school is committed to the principle of partnership with parents. The parents of
all children on the register will be informed on inclusion on the register. Parents’
evenings and the end of year report will inform about progress. Parents are also
welcomed at any time to discuss their child’s progress.
Staff development
The G and T Coordinator will work with the Head to identify and provide suitable
training for staff.
Roles and Responsibilities
Every classroom teacher plays a central role in effective provision for gifted and
talented pupils. They are supported by:
o The Head
o G and T Coordinator
o School Leadership team
o Special Needs Coordinator
o Governors through the designated governor for more able pupils
o LEA (Advisors and the Strand Coordinator for Gifted and Talented Pupils)
o Cluster groups
