									Fungus Kingdom
               Kingdom Fungi

Most fungi share three important
 characteristics:
   –Eukaryotes (have a nucleus)
   –Use spores to reproduce
   –Heterotrophs (eat other organisms)
             Fungus/Fungi

 Cap: The very top of a mushroom
         How do fungi obtain food?
  1. The fungus grows hyphae (tubelike/ root
     like) into its food source
  2. Digestive chemicals ooze from the
     hyphae into
     the food

Hyphae

Food Source
      How do fungi obtain food?

 3. The digestive chemicals break down the
food into small substances that can be
    absorbed into the hyphae.

 So… it basically sucks
its food up through its own
    straw.
              Roles of Fungi
1. Environmental decomposers
What are decomposers?
 Decomposers are organisms that break
      down dead or decaying organisms
           Roles of Fungi

2. Provide Food !!!
             Roles of Fungi

3. Cause diseases

     Athelete foot
          Roles of Fungi

3. Cause diseases

                    Toenail fungus
               Roles of Fungi

4. Fight Diseases

Penicillium is a type of mold
that grows well on citrus fruits.
As penicillium grows, it gives
off a liquid named penicillin.
Penicillin is used as an
antibiotic when people are sick.
                           Lichen
 Lichen –
 Is made of either………………………. living together

               fungus and autotrophic bacteria
                      OR

               fungus and algae
Lichen
                     Lichen can grow on rocks

Lichen can grow on
trees
                       Symbiosis
 Symbiosis – a relationship where at least
one species benefits from living together

     Different types
          Parasitism (parasite & host)
          Mutualism
                     Mutualism
 Mutualism – a close relationship where
    BOTH species benefits

 Examples
 lichen (fungus & auto. bacteria or algae)
 Clown fish & sea anemone
Mutualism
