CHAIR’S ANNUAL REPORT

1) Introduction

Welcome to the North Staffordshire and South Cheshire CIPD Branch Report for 2008/2009.
Your local CIPD Committee consist of a group of dedicated volunteers who meet regularly
providing you with a Programme of Events, regular Newsletters, local website, input into
CIPD nationally, membership and upgrading support, links with the local CIPD centres and a
Special Interest Group. This report describes the activities of North Staffordshire and South
Cheshire Branch during the year, June 2009 – May 2010and our priorities for 2010/2011.

2) Looking Back

2.1) Your Branch Committee
     A team of between 10 and 14 hard working volunteers supported the branch over
        the year, giving their time to support a range of Branch activities.
     The full Committee currently includes; Sue Roberts, Chair and acting Treasurer,
        Council Representative; Leonie Williams, Secretary; Vic Harris, Editor for Newsletter
        and Website; Sarah Lindop; Gary Williams, Andy Davies, Sue Paulukiewicz.
     Several new co-opted members have joined the committee helping with policy
        advice, newsletter contributions and organising events – Paula Cottrell; Jane
        Capewell; Judith Doran; Julie Hallmark, Ele Morrissey
     During the year the following members resigned; Helen Pegg, Estelle Carmichael;
        Rachel Cairns ;Jane Stephen; Chris Shaw, Len Carr, Lou Emberton, Daren Dear
        Thomas Griffiths
     After being on the Committee since 1974 Vic Harris resigns his position today and to
        mark this event the Committee will be honouring him at a special meal on Monday
        7th June, on behalf of the CIPD we thanks him warmly for his continually support and
        dedication and we wish Vic and his wife a very happy retirement.
     A new Independent Consultants Support and Professional Development Group has
        been set up and is managed by Judith Doran.
     Our admin support is provided by an administrator for events, Sharon Davies, and a
        newly appointed Bookkeeper, Mandy Hardy.
2.2) Learning Events
     Events group organised and delivered 9 branch learning and networking events for
        you with over 275 places filled.
     The programme provided a range of HR topics including two networking evenings at
        an Indian and Cantonese restaurant, one employment law, a mock tribunal and
        other events on a variety of topics including Learning and Development, Reward,
        Diversity.

2.3) Communications
     Our Newsletter which showcases the Branch activity and we moved to an electronic
       newsletter during the year which is in keeping with CIPD policy.
     Our Web site www.cipd.co.uk/branch/nstaffs has become a focus for members’
       information. This remains the focus for our communication and the place to book
       events and find on what is happening.
   2.4) Membership and Development

   Performance against targets

        Events group organised and delivered 9 branch events. Sue Paulukiewicz has
         become the events organiser for the Branch
        Increased centre profile, including support at Keele
        The Committee has continued to attract new members welcoming additional co-
         opted members in the year
        Newsletter published electronically via CIPD HQ with information about events and
         feedback from other activities
        Website is regularly updated and now carries all the booking information for events
         and other activities
        Budget maintained and audit completed satisfactorily

   The Committee met in March to agree the main objectives for the forthcoming year

       1. To understand the CIPD plans and policies in order to act as an ambassador and plan
          Branch activities in context with the developing policy and issues.
       2. To improve membership engagement through listening and understanding members
          needs
   3. To promote the CIPD as an organisation, by reviewing and retesting itself against the
      objectives of the organisation.
   4. To encourage new members to network and understand the opportunities they
      have through being members of the organisation
   5. To ensure financial probity and integrity
