Antonis Makrigiannakis obtained his medical degree from Athens University, Greece. He
completed his PhD thesis and post-doctoral studies on molecular pharmacology of hormones and
neuropeptides in the Medical School of the University of Crete Heraklion, Greece, in a combined
project with NIH,. Further training and specialization in infertility and reproductive medicine was
undertaken in the Division of Human Reproduction, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology,
University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. He then moved to London, UK where he worked at
the Hammersmith Hospital as a Senior Scientist in the IVF Unit and the Centre of Reproductive
Medicine. His research is focused on the molecular mechanisms of implantation and has led to
numerous publications in international journals. Particularly he has investigated the biological role
of corticotropin-releasing factor in human endometrium, highlighting its involvement in blastocyst
implantation and maternal immunotolerance.

Currently, Antonis Makrigiannakis holds the position of as Professor in Reproductive Medicine in
the University of Crete. He is the Director of the IVF unit of the University Hospital of Heraklion.
This unit operates for the first time in Heraklion and has been established under his directorate.
Furthermore, he is Director of the Laboratory of Human Reproduction, which occupies seven PhD
students, and two post Docs. The laboratory focuses primarily on basic research on the following
fields:
- Role of the Corticotropin Releasing Hormone in human implantation
- Role of granulosa cell adhesion molecules in corpus luteum formation
