  Editor’s note: Please note that the following data table is the latest available (in which
  greenhouse gas emissions of most countries can be directly compared even though
  they have become outdated). That’s why the UNFCCC continues to use this as
  reference.
Since 2006, China has overtaken the United States as the world’s biggest emitter of
greenhouse gases at 6,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, according to the
Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency. In that year, the US produced 5,800
million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent of GHGs.
