Adult 8 Education When I was at the Union for Reform Judaism Biennial Convention last month I attended a session Men’s Club 9 by Dr. Isa Aaron entitled, “Sacred Strategies: Transforming Synagogues From Functional To Sisterhood Visionary”. It was a wonderful session and it has inspired me in many ways. I want to share with you the characteristics of a functional congregation and one which is visionary as follows: Lifecycles 13 Functional Congregation Visionary Congregation New Members 14 The members are like consumers, paying a fee for There is an all-encompassing shared vision for the Donations certain discrete services. congregation. 14 Tributes Professionals control everything with little lay Congregants participate on all levels of temple life. participation. It is hard to build a visionary congregation but I think it is what we have to do. In the next few months, with your help, I will build a vision for Temple Sinai so that we are clear for what Mitzvah! purpose the Temple exists and we have a plan for how to fulfill that purpose. The Sinai Shofar שופר סיני 2 February 2012 President’s Message Temple Sinai מסר הנשיא Rabbi Malcolm Cohen Cantor Mariana Gindlin I t is always easy to say February is the shortest month of the year. This year, 2012 ,however we are fortunate to have one extra day, since 2012 is a leap year. You may think that is simple since we do this every four years Executive Committee except in century years divisible by 400. In the United States we follow the Dr. Lawrence Copeland, President Gregorian calendar. If you remember earlier this year when Samoa Seymour Kaplan, Vice President changed from one side of The International Date Line to the other it lost one Julie Littmann, Treasurer day. What a shame it is to loose a day!! Think if you were alive on Jack Kaufman, Recording Secretary September 2, 1752 in the British Empire you went to sleep and awoke on Rick Hollander, Corresponding Secretary September 14, 1752. That is the day that England decided to discard the Julian calendar of Julius Cesar and finally join the majority of Europe. Trustees Time and dates of history past therefore are shifted and not static. The Father of our country, Alan Bernstein George Washington whose birthday we celebrate this month was actually born on February 11 Paul Drago in Virginia, a British Colony not the date we celebrated February 22. Abraham Lincoln, “The Brian Katz Great Emancipator”, was born on February 12 in Kentucky. Many of our parents or Dr. Judith (Judy) Salz grandparents were born in Eastern Europe or Russia which did not adopt the Gregorian Gail Schlossberg calendar until after the 1917 Revolution. All of their lives they lost days they never made up. Max Shumow One of the cornerstones of Reform Judaism is social action. This year Temple Sinai is striving to make our congregation more proactive in this undertaking. We need your help. Please Sisterhood volunteer for our programs were are putting together to fulfill this mission. If you have a Ann Kaplan, President program or project that you believe we should support for this and the coming years please give our office a call and let us know. Time and money fulfilling these mitzvahs is what will Men’s Club sustain our congregation in the future and help us all live more purposeful lives. Arthur Weitman, President Diversity is what draws us to Reform Judaism and inclusiveness is our tent. To paraphrase former President William Jefferson Clinton from his speech at the Las Vegas Anti-Defamation Religious School / Youth Group League dinner. What we have learned from the human genome project is that 99.5% of all of Avigail Eisenberg, Director humans’ genomes are the same. What causes many of the problems in society are those .5% differences. Also 2-3% of our DNA comes form Neanderthals, Hilary and Chelsea can Shenker Academy understand that I [President Clinton] have those genes in me , but they could not understand Diane Anagnostopoulos, Director that they had any of those genes in them. Mankind is so similar but we waste so much of our Marisa Lacroix, Director lives on our differences. The classic StarTrek episode with Frank Gorshin titled Let That Be Your Last Battlefield can Controller still be a warning for us all. We do not need to be warring amongst ourselves for 50,000 years Deb Hicks as the protagonists in that episode. Remember the right sided blacks and left sided whites were dominating the left sided blacks and right sided whites for no apparent reasons. Hopefully, the zealots in all religions, races, political parties and creeds learn from that folly. Facilities Our own religion not excluded. Andy Saylor, Facilities Director Use the extra day this year to serve our less fortunate members of society. Donate your time to Temple Office work at a homeless shelter, senior community or charity.
