Advertisement writing The word “advertise” has been derived from Latin word “advertere” meaning “advert” that means to turn or pay attention to describe, to present a product or organization. Advertising is to make the people to buy a product of one particular company. An advertisement done properly is a great way to grab your potential customers. A good advertisement should have: 1. A well-targeted headline. 2. Clear design. 3. Well written text- known as copy. HEADLINE: A good headline should catch reader’s attention & make them want to read on. It might ask a question or inspire curiosity. It may refer to a specific problem. E.g., a bed manufacturer could ask: ‘Had another bad night’s sleep?’ A headline will encourage people to read on if it offers a clear benefit- such as “never have a bad night’s sleep again?’ CLEAR DESIGN: The way an advertisement looks plays a big part in attracting & retaining the reader’s interest. Avoid small & complicated typefaces that are difficult to read. And do not mix too many typefaces in one advertisement – use one or two at the most. Do not clutter the lay out – keep plenty of white space in advertisement – avoid the temptation to say too much. WELL WRITTEN COPY: the amount of text you include depends on the purpose & size of advertisement. Businesses that want to advertise a sale might have a very limited amount of text accompanied by a Headline & a picture of some of the items to offer. If you are writing a lot of text, it should follow on logically from headline, build a convincing case & prompt a response from the reader. Good copy draws attention to the benefits of the products or service rather than focusing solely on the features. You should always write your advertisements with the reader/viewer – your potential customer – in mind. EXAMPLE: Write an advertisement on behalf of J&K Bank, offering loan to customers. Stars Stars Stars Do you want to touch the Stars? Do you want to gleam like Stars? Do you want to give every facility to your Children? There cannot be a better time to take loan. J&K Bank offers the lowest interest rates with so many other facilities/benefits.
