the Handicapped formed
(renamed British Society for
Disability and Oral Health, 1999)
1990, British Society of Gerodontology formed
1990, GDC and DoH sought to formalise
specialist care in the UK
1995 Development Group for
Community Dental Practice
established under the aegis of
RCS England
Report “Moving Forward – Establishing the Specialty of
Special Care Dentistry”
1999, Dean of RCS England established a working
group in SCD which recommend the establishment of a
Joint Advisory Committee in Special Care Dentistry
(JACSCD) as a free standing committee to oversee:
the introduction of training programmes
the development of curricula, training standards
and formative assessments
JACSCD established in 2000 (2000-
2007) produced 2 documents

principle, the development of
a Specialty in SCD
2007, SDEB approved the specialist training
curriculum
2007/8 - consultant appointments made in
anticipation of specialist recognition,
increasing from 2 to circa 14
2008, SAC in SCD set up
September 2008 GDC formal recognition
of specialty in SCD and SAC formed
October 2008 - specialist list opened for
transition
Based on equivalence of 3
years specialist training –
based on experience and
training in a number of areas

Developing curricula, based on GDC guidance for
training in the various dental specialties, and
submitting them to the GDC for approval
Liaison amongst the Dental Faculties, the Specialist
Societies, the Council of Heads and Deans of Dental
Schools and the Postgraduate Dental Deans for the
purpose of developing curricula for specialist training
and related matters
Devising appropriate assessments
and examination regulations in the
dental specialties
Advising the GDC on applications for
specialist listing based on claimed
equivalence in accordance with GDC
guidelines
Making recommendations to the GDC for the
determination of entry qualifications; on the
length and quality of training; and on the
recognition of previous training towards the
specialist training programme
Develop curricula and examination regulations for the
award of postgraduate degrees and university
diplomas in the dental specialties, where appropriate
contributing to the award of CCSTs
Quality manage those postgraduate degrees and
diplomas through processes for academic quality
assurance
Provide advice, through the JCSTD on the specialist
training of clinical academics in dentistry and the award
of CCSTs to such individuals, together with advice on
academic elements of training programmes in the
specialties
Approve and quality manage postgraduate
training programs in the dental specialties
Quality manage specialist training
programmes, according to GDC
requirements, and with external input
Appointment of trainers, trainees and
training programme directors
Conduct assessment
Recommend the award of CCSTs to the GDC
Training programme director submits
request to set up new training programme
to Deanery
Deanery expects to communicate with
SAC but the decision to proceed rests with
Deanery
No more routine SAC visits. If the Deanery
considers that a visit/virtual visit would be
helpful, it will invite the SAC
PG Dean/Director will normally set
CCST date
Deanery will seek advice from SAC
when a SpR requests a reduction in
training time on the basis of previous
learning/experience
Deanery will seek advice from SAC in
relation to programme changes,
maternity leave and CCST date
revisions
Is the focus and location for the work of the
Dental Faculties
Keeps a national register of trainees, including
self-financed/sponsored trainees
Collates and analyses information from an annual
survey of trainees
Is available to the GDC and other parties to
advise on practical aspects of training
Alerts the GDC and other parties to trends and
important changes in the practice of the
respective dental specialist
To be available to the GDC to advise on
matters pertaining to prior training and
learning and equivalence for the purpose
of mediated entry or accredited prior
learning
SAC as a body should provide advice on:
approval of new programmes
recognition of prior
learning/experience towards
specialist training
