                                INTRODUCTION

The Cowansville Protestant Cemetery is situated at the corner
of Main (Rue Principale) 5, North (Rue Nord) Streets, in Cowans
ville Quebec.

Many of the early pioneers are buried here, and range from
Scottish & English settlers to the UEL families that fled
to Canada from USA during the American Revolution.

Peter Cowan, the man who the town was named after, is buried
here. Formerly, known as Nelsonville, some of the grave stones
list the town thusly.

The very first Minister to arrive in the area (c 1804) was
The Rev Charles Caleb COTTON who is buried in this cemetery.
He lived in the village of Dunham.

The Ruiter family were the first settlers of the town, and are
also buried in this cemetery.

It is an area rich in history and much is recorded on the graves
The oldest stone (readable) dates from 1812.

Copied June 1993 by Marlene Simmons, Suzanne Le Rossignol, and
