5 1. CALL TO ORDER:
6 The meeting was called to order at 1:17 by Curriculum Chair, Linda Larson-Singer.

8 2. WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS: Dr. Tamura Howard, a new tenure-track Political Science
9 teacher was introduced and welcomed.

18 5. REPORTS:
19 A. Academic Affairs — Vice President, Leige Doffoney:
20 Leige stated that the Accreditation visit would be on April 27 and evidence of the Curriculum
21 Committee had already been requested and supplied. Applications for instructor in
22 Environmental Studies will be due on April 27; once hired, the faculty member will work on
23 establishing curriculum and developing programs. Discussions are ongoing concerning new
24 buildings and job-driven curriculum and how we propose to develop it.
25 B. Academic Senate President — Al Reed, President:
26 Al stated that more readers are necessary for the mini-program reviews. The Academic Senate
27 elections will take place in late April.
28 C. Academic Senate, SLO Committee — SLO Coordinator, Glenn Yoshida:
29 Glenn distributed the most recent schedule of SLO assessments, including two courses from
30 each department, except for Library, with no offerings. Findings will be presented at Flex day
31 in August; LaShawn Brinson will be one of the presenters. He again stated that he would give
32 help to anyone who needed it; please advise. By 2012 we must have completed a full cycle of
33 SLO assessment at the course, program and institutional levels.
34 D. Articulation — Articulation Officer, Linda Larson-Singer:
35 Linda reported that she is working on the ASSIST update and on District templates for Plans
36 A and B. PE 238, Self-Defense Skills, had been approved for CSU-GE, Area E while Theater
37 270, Beginning Acting, had been denied for both CSU-GE and IGETC as “…the focus of the
38 course remains the development of students’ acting skills rather than the history of the
39 theater.” No response was yet given to Music 101.
40 E. District Curriculum Committee — Curriculum Chair, Linda Larson-Singer:
41 Campus Issues: Linda reported that ECD (Electronic Curriculum Development) is available
42 at http://ecd.laccd.edu.; the deadline for prerequisite validation is approaching, set for the last
43 Curriculum Committee meeting and lists are needed for courses offered Cr/NoCR and Credit
44 by Exam.
45 District Issues: The last meeting of the DCC took place on March 13 and was already
46 reported on. On April 3 Curriculum Chairs and Deans met to discuss curricular obstacles and
47 needs of the new SIS system. She also stated that she would be at a conference on April 24
48 would like someone to represent Southwest at the meeting; Al Reed volunteered.
49 F. Matriculation — Matriculation Coordinator, Rose Calderon:
50 Rose stated that Matriculation has moved to the new Student Services Building. She also
51 stated that any prerequisites older than 6 years will be removed from the catalog if not
52 revalidated by the next Curriculum Committee meeting.

56 --CH DEV 39, Prerequisites, CH DEV 1, 2; Advisory, CH DEV 11 (Amos/Brinson): M/S/P
57 to approve with corrections the updated outline of CH DEV 39, Administration and
58 Supervision of Early Childhood Programs I; M/S/P to approve the prerequisites of CH DEV
59 1, Child Growth and Development and CH DEV 2, Early Childhood: Principles and
60 Practices; M/S/P to approve the advisory of CH DEV 11, Home, School and Community
61 Relations.
62 --PSYCH 43 (Lee): M/S/P to approve with corrections the updated outline of PSYCH 43,
63 Principles of Group Dynamics I.

68 A. Addition of New Courses:
69 --POL SCI 20, Prerequisite, None (3) (Howard/Lee): Dr. Howard stated that POL SCI 20,
70 Race and Ethnicity in Politics, is a course new to the District and also an up and coming
71 field at the university level. The course focuses on racial and ethnic groups, predominately

72 in America. It reviews oppression and empowerment. She continues to try to find a
73 reasonably priced book. She distributed information regarding the offerings of
74 neighboring universities and community colleges. M/S/P to approve the addition of the
75 course new to the district, POL SCI 20, Race and Ethnicity in Politics (3), CSU
76 transferable. M/S/P to approve POL SCI 20 as a general education course (Social and
77 Behavioral Sciences) for Plan A. M/S/P to approve POL SCI 20 to request UC
78 transferability, CSU-GE Area D, and IGETC Area 4.
79 --POL SCI Program Change Request:
80 M/S/P to approve the deletion of POL SCI 8 from the list of recommended electives and the
81 addition of POL SCI 20.
82 --ESLCVCS 013CE, Prerequisite, None (0) (Ruane): Marian stated that the course is an
83 introduction to the American educational system and had grown out of student demand; it
84 is a non-credit course already existing within the District. M/S/P to approve the addition of
85 the non-credit course, ESL CIVICS 013CE, ESL Civics 4.
86 --ESLCVCS 014CE, Prerequisite, None (0) (Ruane): Marian stated that the course is an
87 introduction to the American banking and financial systems and had grown out of student
88 demand; it is a non-credit course already existing within the District. M/S/P to approve the
89 addition of the non-credit course, ESL CIVICS 014CE, ESL Civics 5.

91 --NURSING 501A; Prerequisites, Admission to the RN Program, SOC 1 and SPEECH 101;
92 Corequisite, NUSRING 527 (4.5) CSU (Azubuike): M/S/P to approve with corrections the
93 updated outline of NURSING 501A, Fundamentals of Nursing A; M/S/P to approve the
94 prerequisites of Admission to the RN Program; SOC 1, Introduction to Sociology and
95 SPEECH 101, Oral Communication; M/S/P to approve the Corequisite of NURSING 527,
96 Nursing Process.
97 --NURSING 527; Corequisite, NURSING 501A (1) CSU (Azubuike): M/S/P to approve
98 with corrections the updated outline of NURSING 527, Nursing Process; M/S/P to approve
99 the Corequisite of NURSING 501A, Fundamentals of Nursing A.
100 --PERSDEV 20, Prerequisite, None (3) CSU (Ortega/Morris): M/S/P to approve with
101 corrections the updated outline of PERSDEV 20, Post-Secondary Education: The Scope of
102 Career Planning; M/S/P to approve PERSDEV 20 to request UC transferability and CSU-
103 GE Area E.

106 --FAM &CS 20 (Amos/Brinson): LaShawn stated that the outline had not been updated and
107 currently there are no instructors; the course will need to be removed from CSU-GE.

109 --POL SCI 8, 41 (Howard/Lee): The documents submitted by Sandra Lee, Chair, stated that
110 POL SCI 8 had not been offered since Fall 2000 and POL SCI 41, only once since then.
111 Dr. Howard stated that much of the content of POL SCI 8 is covered in other classes.
112 M/S/P to archive POL SCI 8, The Modern Far East and POL SCI 41, Principles of Student
113 Leadership.
114 --PSYCH 4, 30, 46 (Lee): The documents submitted by Sandra Lee, Chair, stated that
115 PSYCH 4, 30, 46 had not been taught since Fall 2000. M/S/P to archive PSYCH 4, Applied
116 Psychology; PSYCH 30, Introduction to Psychology; and PSYCH 46, Career Guidance.
117 E. Approval of Forms:
118 --General Education Course Application, Update (Larson/GE Subcommittee): M/S/P to
119 approve the slightly revised application for course general education approval. It will be
120 posted on the Curriculum Committee website.
121 --General Education Transfer Eligibility Application, Proposed (Larson/GE
122 Subcommittee): M/S/P to approve the new form to apply for eligibility for transfer status
123 as CSU, UC, CSU-GE and/or IGETC course designations. It will be posted on the
124 Curriculum Committee website.

128 8. ANNOUNCEMENTS:
129 --Pat Lewis announced that she had been consulting with Dr. Daniels and others on the vision of
130 the next 10 years for the Arts building and programs.
131 --Reggie Morris announced that Counselors were hosting a Counselor’s Awareness Day on April
132 29 in front of the new building.
