Opportunities for TRAINING CONTRACTS
Your training contract is about making the transition from the academic study of law to becoming a fully
fledged practising lawyer and much of what you learn is through working as part of a team under the
careful supervision of a Partner or senior solicitor. You will have client contact from an early stage in
your training and participate in all aspects of researching, drafting and giving client advice. McGrigors
trainees rotate through four six-month seats, covering a range of corporate and commercial disciplines
and gaining diverse legal and commercial experience.

In London, for our English qualifying trainees, we deliver the Professional Skills Course ("PSC"), in
conjunction with a small consortium of London City firms. The PSC is a compulsory programme of skills
training prescribed by the Law Society of England & Wales and is the last hurdle to qualification as a
solicitor. The PSC consists of Core and Elective modules, including Advocacy and Communication,
Client Care and Ethics and Finance and Business Skills.

In Scotland, for our Scots qualifying trainees, we are fully accredited by the Law Society of Scotland to
deliver the Professional Competence Course ("PCC") internally. Like the PSC, the Scottish PCC is a
mandatory course for all Scots qualifying trainees and the last hurdle to qualification as a solicitor. The
PCC consists of both core and elective modules. Trainees complete core modules including Drafting
and Writing Skills, Negotiation, Personal Organisation and Time Management, Practical Ethics and Risk
Management and Communication and Client Care. Elective modules include Corporate, Banking,
Property, and Construction Procurement depending on the seats they are allocated.

Oxford Brookes University

Background

Oxford Brookes University offers both the GDL conversion course and, through the Oxford
Institute of Legal Practice, the LPC for intending solicitors.

Courses

Students on both courses benefit from an individualised approach and we work hard to foster
a friendly, collegial atmosphere with fully supportive staff. Links between the two courses are
close and those who pass the GDL are guaranteed a place on the LPC. Students who take
both the GDL and the LPC at Brookes can opt to swap their diplomas for an LLB degree. LPC
graduates can also apply to top-up their LPC to an LLM in Legal Practice.

The Brookes’ GDL is a highly-regarded course, attracting high-calibre students, which
recognises both the academic and professional requirements of the qualification.

OXILP’s LPC also has an excellent reputation and is jointly validated by Brookes and the
      University of Oxford.

Extra-curricular activities at Brookes include pro bono, advocacy master-classes and a wide
      variety of sports clubs.

The GDL and the LPC are offered in both full and part time modes.

Stephenson Harwood
Background

Stephenson Harwood is a thriving, international law firm with over 100 partners and more than
      600 staff worldwide.

Opportunities for TRAINING CONTRACTS

      Trainee profile
Firstly we look for a quick intellect. As well as at least a 2:1 in any discipline plus 320 UCAS
points or equivalent, you’ll need strong analytical skills, sound judgement, imagination and
meticulous attention to detail. Also vital are the communication skills to be persuasive and
build rapport, plenty of drive and determination, plus a keen interest in business.

      Training environment
We take just 16 trainees on each year. So you can look forward to a huge amount of
individual attention, coaching and monitoring. Your structured programme involves four six-
month seats in our contentious and non-contentious practice groups. And it will be
challenging. You can expect on-the-job training complemented by in-house seminars; to
share an office with a partner or senior associate; and to benefit from a continuous review of
your career development. You could also have the chance to spend one of your six-month
seats in Hong Kong or Singapore and to take advantage of client secondment opportunities.
We’ll give you your own caseload and as much responsibility as you can shoulder – not
forgetting free language tuition where appropriate.

Discipline(s) 2.1 or above from ANY discipline
      Location(s) London
      Application Online via www.shlegal.com/graduate
      Closing Date 31 July 2012

Opportunities for VACATION PLACEMENT and OPEN DAYS

We run Christmas, Easter and summer vacation schemes each year. Typically you’d spend
one or two weeks in our offices – spending time in one or two of our practice groups. Sitting
with qualified lawyers, meeting clients, tackling some case work and visiting several City
institutions as well as attending court, you’ll get a real taste of life at our firm.

On your first day, we’ll assign you a buddy – a current trainee who’ll help you settle in, answer
your questions and give you an honest overview of what it’s like to work for us. You’ll also be
able to make the most of an organised programme of interactive sessions – one of which is
given by our CEO, Sharon White – plus various social events and talks.

We have eight places on each scheme for both law and non-law students. Find out more at
