The use of radiation will be for 5 1/2 weeks, around 5 days a week. Previous experience demonstrates that Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) is an effective and fairly safe treatment modality for long-term local control of complex-shaped and otherwise difficult to treat meningiomas. It is UNCOMMON, BUT NOT EXTREMELY RARE for the treatment to blind you or give you long-term vision loss in your good/left eye from the treatment, but it is COMMON to TEMPORARILY experience vision loss and additional loss of coordination . It is UNCOMMON to PERMANENTLY worsen your present condition. In addition, headache and nausea are UNCOMMON. TEMPORARY tiredness, TEMPORARY skin reddening , TEMPORARY or even PERMANENT hair loss in the treated area, as well as TEMPORARY worsening of your condition are COMMON side effects. However drowsiness is UNCOMMON. Permanent worsening of your bodily coordination in UNCOMMON. Short term memory loss is UNCOMMON. Most patients can carry on with their activities despite the temporary fatigue. Dr. Shirazi will help you manage some of the side effects. IMRT is an extremely precise treatment of central nervous system meningiomas, and is feasible and safe, offering highly conformal irradiation for complex-shaped skull-base tumors while sparing adjacent critical structures. However, unforeseen side effects may occur because of the unique and varied tolerance of each person. Late effects of the treatment may not always be predictable and may be influenced by many factors. However, IMRT is considered the treatment of choice for inoperable or subtotally resected meningiomas and for otherwise difficult-to-treat, complex-shaped tumors of the central nervous system adjacent to critical structures. Despite all precautions, unexpected complications may occur. Nonetheless, deafness, paralysis, brain swelling and death are EXTREMELY RARE. The probability of long-term progression-free survival after radiotherapy exceeds 90%
