Why build learning power?
A history of learning:

✤ 1st generation:

✤ raising attainment, ‘good teaching’ =
✤ Brain research – mind is
content + acquisition. ‘Learning’ – outcome
    of schooling
                                                          improvable, habits can be
                                                          changed and developed
✤ 2nd generation:
                                                      ✤ Research – students are
✤ develop study skills, hints & tips on retaining
and recalling for tests becoming increasingly
                                                          dependent, we must
✤ 3rd generation empower them as learners
Characteristic ways of learning – multiple
✤
intelligences, VAK,emotional factors (‘self- ✤ Fast pace of change –
    esteem’)
                                                          students need new learning
✤ 4th generation: skills (PLTs)

✤ involvement of students in process of
    Time to think and chat-
      Exceptional People

Think of two people you regard
✤

as exceptional.
Please discuss all the qualities
✤

that make them exceptional.
What effect will BLP have at
          Shipston High?

✤ Raised achievement

✤ Increased engagement in learning

✤ Increased motivation and enjoyment

✤ Supple learning minds

✤ Portable learning power

✤ Young people, all of whom have the appetite, capacity and
confidence to face the challenges of life
                      BLP Infusion
✤ Making a small number of changes that are: -

✤ Coherent- all aimed at building learning power

✤ Pervasive- run across the whole school

✤ Practical- not threatening

✤ Precise- not airy-fairy or wishful thinking

✤ Sustained- not a quick fix or latest fad

✤ Cumulative- build over time

The Four R’s: Resourcefulness
The Four R’s: Reflectiveness
The Four R’s: Reciprocity
                       A BLP Culture

✤ The Teacher
✤ Language- talking about learners and learning, “could be”
✤ Example- the power of imitation
✤ Engaging the learner in controlling the process (Active)

✤ The Classroom
✤ Activities- split-screen lessons, making learning explicit, AfL
✤ Environment- displays, library, ICT Suite, layout, stuckness

✤ The School
✤ A community of explorers- everyone a learner (Learning Gym)
✤ The vital signs- indicators of progress
Sharing BLP Vocabulary
           The Teacher’s Palette

✤ Just like a physical coach, a learning power coach should help
learners narrow the gap between current and target
    performance
                      Stuckness

✤ When learning occurs

✤ Promotes
    independence

✤ Promotes the use of
    many learning muscles

✤ NOT PASSIVE
    LEARNING
