May 4th, 2012

Dear 2012-2013 English II: Honors American Literatures Student,

Congratulations on your completion of freshman year! We in the English Department are looking forward to
working with you again next year as you continue to develop intellectually and personally.

Your scholarly pursuits in English will begin this summer with this year’s summer reading text and the writing
assignment that accompanies it. These reading and writing exercises will become your first graded assignment of
the 2012-2013 school year.

 You will receive a copy of the short story “Mother Dear and Daddy” by Junius Edwards.
 You will need to obtain 1 more short story of your choosing with a similar theme to be used as a source for
          your writing assignment.

Your assignment must be completed before the first day of school, and you should bring the completed assignment
with you to English class. Read over the assignment carefully and understand that your work needs to represent
your best, most thoughtful effort.

Summer Reading Assignment:

     1. Read “Mother Dear and Daddy” by Junius Edwards.
     2. Annotate text with guide that is given to you. Decide what you believe the big idea or theme is of the
          short story.
     3. Find a short story that has a similar theme to “Mother Dear and Daddy.”
     4. Annotate text with guide that is given to you.
     5. Complete essay planning sheet (provided) answering the following question: Compare/Contrast how
the author’s of the short stories use small details/literary devices to create the big idea/theme.

The purpose of this assignment is threefold:

     1. Continue to pursue the love of reading by testing out varied texts inside and outside of school
     2. Show your new Sophomore teacher where you are in terms of your writing and analytical skills
     3. Create a starting off point to measure your growth throughout your 10 th grade year

Please make sure that you put forth the greatest effort in representing yourself and the work you have done with
your Freshman English teacher. This assignment not only counts as an integral part of your grade Sophomore year,
it also serves as your FIRST impression on your new teacher and those are crucial to your success!

Summer is a time where we can settle back and reflect on what has occurred and imagine what is to come. As you
settle into the summer and enter into the lives of the characters, reflect on your life as a scholar in progress. If you
have any questions please email us and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Ms. Eisenbaum
(seisenbaum@nlcphs.org) Mrs. Tempone (jtempone@nlcphs.org) and Mr. Taylor (itaylor@nlcphs.org).

With best wishes for your summer,

Sara Eisenbaum, Ian Taylor, Jennet Tempone
