The Crisis:
The Crisis:
Why DO WE Have a Responsibility
  to Manage the Environment?
     Ecosystem Management
An integrated new science

It attempts to integrate:
Ecological, economic, and social goals
Into a unified management approach.

THIS IS NEW.
       Principles of Ecosystem
             Management
Managing across whole landscapes,
watersheds, or regions over an ecological
 time scale
        Principles of Ecosystem
              Management
 Considering
    human needs
    and promoting
    sustainable
    economic
    development
    and
    communities
         Principles of Ecosystem
               Management
 Maintaining biodiversity and essential
    ecosystem processes
           Principles of Ecosystem
                 Management
 Utilizing
    cooperative
    institutional
    arrangements
         Principles of Ecosystem
               Management
 Integrating science and management
      Principles of Ecosystem
            Management
Generating meaningful stakeholder and
 public involvement and facilitating
 collective decision making….WHY?
      Principles of Ecosystem
            Management
Adapting management over time, based on
  conscious experimentation and routine
  monitoring.
 US Forest Service

 Bureau of Land Management

 National Park Service
 Goals of Ecosystem Management
Maintain viable populations of native species
in situ. (that means….not in a zoo!)
 Goals of Ecosystem Management
Represent, within protected areas, all native
ecosystem types across their natural range
 of variation.
 Goals of Ecosystem Management
Protect essential ecological processes such
  as nutrient cycles, succession, hydrologic
  processes, etc.
    Goals of Ecosystem Management
 Manage over long enough time periods to
sustain the evolutional potential of species
    and ecosystems.
    Goals of Ecosystem Management
 Accommodate human use and occupancy
    within these constraints.
Not everyone is on Board….
                The critiques:
 We don’t understand ecosystems and WE
    NEVER WILL

 It is arrogant of us to imagine we can manage
    nature

 Immediate needs of people outweigh the needs
    of nature

 This problem will only grow worse as the
    popultation rises.
 The debate lingers…
   Pessimisim vs. optimism
 Preservation vs. conservation

 Conservative vs. progressive

      What should we do?
      Or do we do nothing.
          Then what?
What do you think?
The chapter test/current events
It will be Tuesday.
Wednesday is too short.
You may turn in HK, and the Aldo Paper
  Wednesday.
Wednesday we will discuss the aliens
  activity.
HK for the break: Coral Activity.
We start research projects when you get
  back.
The chapter test: what to expect?
 An essay on your land ethic: aldo info, be
able to apply it to the chapter.
 Pick a biome. Be able to talk about it in
    an essay.
 Understand and be able to apply the five
    R’s CASE STUDY
 Be able to apply the ecosystem
management plan to a case study.
 Of course, matching and M/C
