2012 Miss La Mesa (ages 17-26) and Miss Teen La Mesa (ages 13-17) Pageants Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Miss La Mesa and Miss Teen La Mesa Pageant. The pageants have been a tradition in the city of La Mesa for more than 60 years! Our program is rich with tradition and is an outstanding mentoring and leadership opportunity for young women. This year will be very special as we will be crowning the “Centennial Queen” as the City of La Mesa is celebrating their 100 year anniversary! The Miss La Mesa and Miss Santee Pageants have been held together in the same show for more than a decade. The 2012 pageants are set for Friday, March 2, 2012. We put on a fabulous show that is open to the public where four young women earn the opportunity of a lifetime to be the official hostess for their city. This year a $1,000.00 scholarship will be awarded to Miss La Mesa 2012 and $500.00 to Miss Teen La Mesa 2012! Contestants will be scored in the following categories: Interview (30% of total score), Physical Fitness and Beauty (15% of total score), Speech (15% of total score), Evening Gown (10% of total score), On Stage Impromptu Question (10% of total score) and Poise, Personality and Overall Impression (20% of total score). Being Miss La Mesa and Miss Teen La Mesa is a once in a life time opportunity. You become a part of a sisterhood of amazing women and you will be a part of history forever. Many people ask what would be expected of me should I win? For the most part your year as a titleholder is what you make of it. There are some “major” events that the titleholders participate in every year: Oktoberfest, Christmas Village, Car Shows and Parades. In addition, the titleholders will attend the events held by the Chamber of Commerce: Grand openings, mixers and special events. Some weeks there may be 5 events while others may have none. Some Miss La Mesa’s go above and beyond and volunteer and assist with organization’s that they are passionate about. It is really up to you to make the most of your year…it goes by so fast! We do ask that should you win you give this job your 110% effort, as you are taking the opportunity away from the other girls in the pageant would do anything for the opportunity. School and family always comes first, but your pageant obligations should come next. Events come up all days of the week at all hours and we do our best to get you at as many of them as possible. We won’t ask you to skip class or a family wedding for an event but it may mean getting up at 6 a.m. to go to a chamber breakfast or missing out on a night out with friends for a business grand opening. If you participate in sports or other school activities, that ok! The busiest girls make the best titleholders so please think twice before you say “I am too busy for this!” You would be doing a disservice to the other contestants by not showing up to an event because you are tired or don’t feel like it. Also, we ask that the winners remain living in San Diego County so that you can fulfill your duties. If going to a college in another state has been your dream, participating in this pageant might not be the right fit for you. Use this list as a guide and checklist as you prepare for the pageant. It is always a good idea to use it again as a checklist the night before and/or the morning of the pageant, before you leave your house, double check that you have EVERYTHING that you will need for the day. If you have any questions, please feel free to call any member of the Pageant Staff. 1. Opening dance number outfit – TBD We try to keep it simple and easy so there is no extra expense. 2. Interview Suit or Dress (age appropriate) - Will be worn for your daytime interview 3. Speech Outfit: Will be worn while you give you speech. Costumes/props are okay. 4. Evening Gown - must be floor length. Shorter in the front and longer in the back styles are okay. 5. Rehearsal Clothing (comfortable) and a cover-up (something warm & comfy). 6. Shoes for each outfit 7. Hair and Make-up equipment (hot rollers, curling irons, pins, hairspray, etc.) 8. Personal hygiene products. 9. Snacks/Lunch/Water - you will not be allowed to leave, so it is a good idea to bring your own snacks. If you have any special dietary needs, be sure to bring whatever you may need with you. 10. Mirrors - you may bring any size mirror, up to full length, that you may want or need to use. DO NOT rely on using someone else’s mirror. They brought a mirror for their own use and should not have to worry about sharing it with someone else who’s also trying to get ready. Be considerate to your fellow contestants. 11. Cover-up or jacket to wear (over your evening gown) to reception if you are crowned the NEW QUEEN. It may be cool or even raining out! 12. One (1) suitcase or bag - all of your belongings should be packed into one suitcase or bag. There will not be enough room in the dressing room for each delegate to have several bags or suitcases lying around. It is also a good idea to bring your own rolling rack. They can be found at Target for about $20.00. 13. A blanket of some sort to lay out on the floor as your “SPACE” to put your things on and prepare for the pageant. 14. EVERYONE is responsible for cleaning up the dressing room. The staff is there to help you, NOT CLEAN UP AFTER YOU. Once you are in your Evening Gown, everyone needs to get packed up and everything cleaned up. Throw your trash out, etc. There will be NO FOOD IN THE DRESSING ROOMS!!! All food can be taken to and eaten in the café area only. Reminder - NEW QUEENS and your parents and guests will go to a local restaurant TBD for the pageant after party. We understand everyone may have prior commitments and we do not want these to prevent you from participating. However, please note that each Sunday we will be doing activities to prepare you for the pageant so it is in your best interest to attend when possible. We will do a brief orientation about our program and answer questions. Parents are welcome for the first hour. Please come prepared with any question you may have. Then we will start rehearsal and do some activities to prepare you for pageant day. Today we will have an opportunity drawing for two $100.00 gift certificates to PreVue Formal and Bridal. Tickets are $5 each or an arm’s length for $20. We will choose a winner at the start of next week’s rehearsal. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2012 REHEARSAL 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Santee City Hall Complex 10601 Magnolia Ave. Santee, CA 92071 Building 8 At the start of rehearsal we will draw the winners of the PreVue opportunity drawing. This is the last day to turn in paperwork and sponsor information and the last day we will accept new contestants. Today we will be photographing everyone for the program book for the first hour and we will draw our contestant numbers/order. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2012 REHEARSAL 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Santee City Hall Complex 10601 Magnolia Ave. Santee, CA 92071 Building 8 We will start with a walking lesson with Jim Crawford then we will dance with our choreographer Claudia. We will finish by writing our essay for the essay contest. Essay winners will receive a $250 scholarship. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2012 LAST SUNDAY REHEARSAL AND QUEENS DINNER 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Santee City Hall Complex 10601 Magnolia Ave. Santee, CA 92071 Building 8 Please arrive in your opening dance number outfit to rehearsal. We will rehearse in costume a few times and then you can change into your comfy rehearsal clothes. You will also all give your speeches today, please have your speech memorized when you come to rehearsal. Queens Dinner: After rehearsal we will all change and go to dinner at a restaurant TBD in honor of the 2011 Queens. Dress nice, no jeans. Contestants will carpool from rehearsal to dinner and anyone who needs to be picked up can be picked up at 8:00 p.m. from the dinner. THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 2011 DRESS REHEARSAL 4:00 p.m. TO 7:00 p.m. Sonrise Community Center 8805 N. Magnolia Ave Santee, CA 92071 We will be rehearsing entire pageant on stage from beginning to end. Bring shoes to dance in and heels to walk in on stage. Parents may not stay for rehearsal. Tickets and program books will be available if you are paying by cash only. We will also vote for Miss Congeniality tonight! FRIDAY, MARCH 2, 2012 PAGEANT DAY Sonrise Community Center 8805 N. Magnolia Ave Santee, CA 92071 (See Pageant Day Schedule) 11:45 a.m. doors will open to guests for the speech presentation at 12:00 p.m. There is no fee to attend the speech presentation and we encourage everyone to attend! Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6:00 p.m. show. There is no seat saving, everyone must be present to get a seat and it is on a first come first serve basis. Tickets will be available at the door for $25.00 each, program books $10.00 each, we will accept cash only. Miss La Mesa and Miss Santee 2012 Miss Teen La Mesa and Miss Teen Santee 2012 TICKET INFORMATION At orientation only on Sunday, February 5 tickets will be $10 each. Pre sale tickets at the rehearsals on February 12 and 19 will be $15 each. After February 19 we will accept cash only. Tickets on February 26 and at the dress rehearsal on March 2 are $20 each, cash only. Tickets at the door on pageant night are $25 each, cash only. All pageant tickets include entry in to the day time speech presentation. Program books will be printed in full color for $10 each or 3 for $25 and will be available starting at dress rehearsal on March 2. Children 5 and under do not require a ticket as long as they are seated in the lap of an adult and do not take up a seat. We strongly discourage young children from attending the pageant if possible as they can be distracting to the contestants who are competing on stage. If you do bring young children please remove them from the theater should they become a disruption. We want each contestant on stage to have a fair opportunity to answers their onstage questions. Premium Seating: This year we will have available 54 assigned premium seats at a cost of $30 each. These seats are in the 3rd and 4th rows of the center section of Sonrise Church. These will be assigned and reserved so your guests do not have to wait in line. They will be available at orientation on a first come first serve basis.
