                                             General Description
Under the general supervision of a the Program Manager, the AmeriCorps Vista member will work with the
Children’s Health Initiative (CHI), a collaborative effort between public and private organizations to promote
affordable health insurance, improve health access, and promote the importance of preventive and baby-well
health care services, to ensure the healthy development and well-being of all children, prenatal through the age
5. The members will promote FIRST 5 Santa Clara County goals consistent with FIRST 5 Core Values and
Essential Elements.
                                                    Typical Tasks
This position performs a variety of community engagement and education related to Santa Clara County’s
Children’s Health Initiative:
     Building relationships and partnerships among; parents, agencies, schools, early care and child care
        providers, etc.
     Educate the community about FIRST 5 funded and non-funded programs that serve families with
        children prenatal through age 5.
     Promote Santa Clara County’s plan to enroll all children under the age of 19, and specifically under the
        age of 6 in an affordable health insurance.
     Assist families in understanding the 3 types of affordable health insurance plans available in Santa
        Clara County.
     Assist eligible families in applying for affordable health insurance.
     Conduct community outreach and presentations that are culturally and language-appropriate and
        reflective of the communities served.
     Work with FIRST 5 staff in data collection, needs assessment, and monthly reporting process.
     Conduct follow-up activities to ensure family’s health insurance enrollment process is complete, and
        ensure health services are accessed.
     Participate in community events on behalf of FIRST 5.
     Recruit, train, and support community volunteers.
     Assist with the coordination of logistics at workshops, meetings and other FIRST 5 activities.
     Other tasks as assigned.
                                            Required Qualifications
        Be at least 18 years of age.
        Able to serve largely weekends and evenings.
        Must be U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States.
        Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
        Must have a valid California Driver’s License, automobile insurance and reliable means of
         transportation.
        Must receive clearance of fingerprint background check.
        Requires twelve-month full-time service commitment.
        Bilingual language capacity in Spanish-English and/or Vietnamese-English a plus.

 Work Environment:
         Will require serving largely evenings and weekends.
         Travel, within the County.
         Fast paced, diverse and dynamic environment.
         The service is sometimes physical, requiring setting up for events which may require transporting or
          lifting cumbersome materials, e.g., easels, flip charts, refreshments, brochures, chairs, tables, etc.
 Terms of Service:
      Members are expected to serve an average of 40 hours per week throughout the twelve (12) months.
 Educational Award
      Members are eligible for an educational award of $4,725 or a cash stipend of $1200 upon completion
        of full term.
      The award may be used to repay existing, current, or future student loans or educational expenses at a
        qualified institution of higher education or an approved school-to-work program.
 Health Benefits
      Minimal individual medical and accidental death benefits are provided at no cost to the member only.
        Members can elect life insurance coverage at a minimum deduction of $2.24 per pay period.
      To be eligible for health care insurance, a member cannot be enrolled in another health insurance plan.
 Child Care Assistance
      Members may be eligible for childcare assistance for children under the age of 13.


REQUIRED CLEARANCES:
Applicant’s placement is contingent upon successful completion of state and federal background
investigation including livescan fingerprinting, and approval by the Corporation for National and
Community Services after enrollment. Relocating applicants will be expected to complete
fingerprinting within 10 days of reporting to their host site and may be released at the cost of
the member.

The commitment term is one year of full-time service, without outside commitments such as
school or employment. The term begins January 26, 2008 and ending January 25,
2009. You will also attend an all expense paid training before you begin on January 22 – 25,
2008 to kick start your service term!

and activities described above as a VISTA Member with the California First 5 Service Corps
Program. I understand that this offer is contingent upon successful completion of the
enrollment process and approval by the national State Officer with CNCS. I will not make any
travel arrangements until notified by CNCS.
