Subject:            Workshops on “Developing intercultural communication skills when learning
                    history in a multicultural context: pupils’ assessment in focus”.
                    Nicosia, Friday 16 – Saturday 17 April 2010

Dear Sir, Madam,

I have pleasure in informing you that the Council of Europe with the support of the United
Nations Development Programme – Action for Cooperation and Trust will organise
Workshops on “Developing intercultural communication skills when learning history in a
multicultural context: pupils’ assessment in focus” in Nicosia, which will take place on
Friday 16 April at Goethe Institute and on Saturday 17 April 2010 at Goethe Institute, Cyprus
Community Media Centre - CCMC (in between Ledra Palace Hotel and the Fulbright Centre)
and JW Fulbright Centre, Nicosia.

The Workshops will begin on Friday 16 April at 15.00 and will end the next day at around
17.00. For more information please see the attached programme.

The aims of the Workshops are to:

i.      discuss how teaching materials could help teachers to assess intercultural
        communication skills of their pupils acquired within history lessons;

ii.     examine ways of using assessment to improve pupils’ learning: formative aspects;

iii.    analyse how to determine the level of pupils’ skills when working with historical
        sources: summative assessment;

The Workshops will bring together 100 history teachers and teacher trainers from all over
Cyprus.
The working languages of the Workshops will be English, Greek and Turkish and
interpretation will be provided.

Participants should be willing to participate actively in the discussions and attend both the
plenary and the workshops.
