students are involved in sports; this training has a high penetration potential. Area high school
principals have expressed interest. A presentation has been made at Summerfield High School.
Highlights of the PowerPoint include:
What will help you (an athlete) reach optimal performance?
Nutrition – importance of eating protein immediately following exercise to build muscle
fiber. Suggestions include chocolate milk, fig newtons, or raisins.
Sleep – people need REM sleep which is attained by sleeping at least 8 hours. During
REM sleep, the brain is able to sleep. There is no substitute for this.
Alcohol – breaks down testosterone. Alcohol stays in your system for 4 to 5 days after
drinking. One drink impacts training for 14 days – loss of speed, slower reaction time,
less accuracy, less endurance, slower reflexes, risk of injury is twice as high, poorer
academic performance.
Marijuana use results in decreased functioning, lack of focus, quickness, and agility.
Marijuana stays in your system for 5 to 8 days with just a one-time use.
Prescription Drugs – what’s the big deal? It’s illegal to take someone else’s meds.
Changing the thinking of “Just Do It” to “Just Don’t Do It – Use Alcohol or Drugs”
Raise the bar for yourself – think about every choice you make.
Tressa Duffin added that they have obtained input from Adrian College and that the PowerPoint will
be presented at an in-service to regional athletic directors on January 16, 2012.
