WELCOME TO INDONESIA – SELAMAT DATANG DI INDONESIA
Finally the time has come. We, the Indonesian delegates and family are very
anxious to meet and greet our partner. It seems to us that it was only a few
weeks ago that we have shared our ‘bed and meal’ together. We have learned a
lot about Canada, the people, the culture and the custom from the Canada
delegates and family during our short period June 23 – July 14, which we have
lived in the beautiful place in Canada. The opportunity gives us a very memorable
and important experience, regarding the CISV vision and mission –building global
friendship and promotes peace.
IC Canada has chosen REFLECTION as the theme of this year CISV Interchange
Program. REFLECTION is a good theme. The theme makes us to look for ways in
which we are all alike. It means that differences will not be an obstacle to build
friendship and global peace. The delegates’ role in the program is bridging
differences. Thus, the delegates have proofed that although we came from a
different country, we can be friends and learn from each other, we will look on
how alike we are to each other. We have a chance to proof that we are all alike,
we can learn from each other and be a better person. REFLECTION has thought us
many things such as Appreciation, Respect and Communication and many more.
These subjects give the delegates confidence in taking part in their social life
“give and share”.
Cendrawasih Chapter is very great full to have Ottawa Chapter as the partner this
year. During December 13, 2008 to January 3, 2009. The Indonesian Delegate,
Family and friends, as well as Cendrawasih Chapter, will make sure that the
Canadian delegate will have a wonderful and memorable time like what we have
in Canada. We have arranged a program that will add the Canadian delegates
some knowledge on Indonesian people and culture.
This booklet will help the participant to participate in the program.
ENJOY YOUR STAY, ENJOY THE PROGRAME.

of ‘sarong’ and cloth
wore in Indonesia
from way back in the
18th century. The
cloths are hand
woven and paint. Some of the threads used are made out of gold and silver.
Beads are also used to decorate the cloth.
One of the varieties that are still popular is batik. The word Batik is originally an
Indonesian-Malay word and means to dot. The pride of Indonesians to wear batik
till the present day has preserved this art of textile.
The beauty of Batik is a tribute to the patience, creativity of the woman of Java,
the main island of Indonesia. Indonesian Batik is made in several regions, but the
center of the art is Central Java, in cities like Yogyakarta, Solo, Cirebon,
Pekalongan and Indramayu.
In the Museum, the delegates will be able to experience how to make batik, and
learn the history and methods of the traditional art of Javanese batik.
First the delegate will be given a white cloth or a T shirt. Then each delegate has
to select the motive they want and draw the outline on the cloth.
The next step, the instructor will show how to use the instrument called ‘canting’
to cover the lines with wax. The coloring process will be done by the staff
according to the color that is chosen. The delegates take home the T Shirt batik
