everyone!!! Denis Bloomfield, David Kemp and Rev Michael

From the Chairman:
Many of you will be aware of some of the problems the County has experienced. It started with the loss of our
County Treasurer, the County Chairman then stood down for personal reasons and very shortly after, the Vice-
chairman resigned. It would not be appropriate to say why they took this action. That is a personal matter and it is their
decision whether they wish to promulgate their reasons. On the bright side however, we have a new County Secretary.

Your County Committee has appointed me as Chairman County. I intend to lead the County Committee and
hopefully bring some stability, thus ensuring my successor has a trouble-free induction into the chairman’s position.
We have had our problems, but they are now behind us and I am looking forward to keeping Suffolk in the higher
quartile of efficient counties. I will be subjected to an election at the 2011 County Conference for another year until
January 2012 which would have been Denis’s finale.

On behalf of the County I have sent the new National Chairman, John Farmer, a letter of congratulations. I
was John’s Vice-chairman from 2000/2003 and I am confident, having worked with him, he will make a good chairman.

Since my so called “retirement” when I stood down as County Chairman in 2006, I have occasionally heard
critical comments uttered in a spiteful manner, referring to those helping the Legion who were not ex-service. These
views have no place in the modern Legion. There should be no discrimination as we have only one grade of
membership. In extreme cases, anyone expressing these unhelpful remarks could find themselves on a Complaints
Hearing if someone makes a formal complaint against them. Hopefully this will not happen but I urge you all to censure
anyone expressing these unaccommodating views. I will be repeating this message throughout my tenure of office.

Conference delegates rejected two motions of urgency to increase the affiliation fee. This is despite the cost of
the membership services being more than the affiliation fee income. I will personally be watching with bated breath as
to what the Board of Trustees may consider is the appropriate line of action. Whatever it is, the issue is not going to go
away. If we want the service then we have to pay for it.

I look forward to meeting many of you during the summer, let’s hope the weather is kind to us.

        Colin Hawkins

COUNTY NOTICES - from The Secretary

Hello to you all

I hope by now the news has permeated throughout the County that you have a new County
Secretary. As you may know already, there have been changes since my joining the Legion but,
hopefully, we can now move forward under the Leadership of our new Chairman. To this end, I
would urge you to approach your members to see if we can fill the remaining vacant posts on the
County Committee in order to continue and improve the valiant efforts in Fundraising and Welfare
that the County has already shown.

On a more personal level, I live in Ipswich, born and bred, and have a son of 24 and a daughter of
22. I also have 3 (on a day to day basis) and 4 (intermittently), large dogs which need a lot of
walking and I play golf as and when I can. (I play off 24 for any of those who are in the know!). I
have had the last 13 months at Suffolk County Council organising road works and gritting, having
been made redundant after 17 years from Suffolk College in business support. Here I dealt with a
great deal of rules, regulations, procedures and Quality Assurance for examination boards and
student registrations and also organised some large events. I also have a background in the
licensed trade and have spent time as a licensee.

I have already met some of you and enjoyed my first Suffolk Show with you. I have already
received invitations out to branch and group meetings and to some Clubs so I hope to meet many
more of you very soon

What is Heroes Return 2?
Heroes Return 2 has been set up to help veterans to commemorate the anniversaries of
events that led to the end of the Second World War. Veterans are people who saw active
service with, or alongside, the British and Allied Armed Forces during the Second World War.
How will Heroes Return 2 help?
We will make grants towards the travel and accommodation costs (including insurance) of
commemorative visits to the areas where British Armed Forces saw active service during the
Second World War and to attend recognised commemorative services in the UK. A fixed sum
will be available for each veteran, or the widows or widowers of veterans, towards the cost of
their visit. We will also contribute to spouses’ and carers’ travel and accommodation costs. So
that as many veterans as possible get this opportunity, we can only fund one visit for each
veteran, widow or widower. Visits must take place between 1 April 2009 and 31 December
2010. We can make a grant even if you have already booked or paid for your trip, provided that
you are planning to travel between these dates.
How much money will be offered?
There are different amounts of money for different destinations.

For your trips to the National Arboretum

Dear president, secretary and members.

I am writing to offer you our special, group package rates for veterans and their families. Over the past few years
we have hosted some very successful nights/weekends where we have provided our quality food and
accommodation for various groups of ex-forces personnel and their families including some British Legions.

Whether in the area to pay their respects at the National Memorial Arboretum, which is merely a fifteen minute
drive from the hotel, or simply to re-unite with old comrades, all parties concerned have left happy and fulfilled.
You could incorporate both into your stay at the historic cathedral, City of Lichfield home of the Staffordshire

Please read the attached document for more information about our 3 star accommodation and our special rates
that include a three course meal, en-suite room and a full English breakfast. (from £40 p.p.p.n.) (Copy is available
in County Office)

I particularly enjoy the company of ex-servicemen in our late bar as I am an ex-Stafford myself and I look
forward to yours.

If you have any questions or to make booking inquiries don’t hesitate to contact the hotel and if I am unavailable
I will get back to you a.s.a.p or alternatively e-mail me f.a.o. Anthony (Events manager), with your contact details
and I will call you.
