Overview
Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis is the nation’s largest event dedicated to finding cures for digestive diseases. Millions of
people suffer every day from Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and the money raised by Take Steps supports research
to bring us closer to a future free from these painful and unpredictable diseases. Throughout the year, Take Steps brings
together members of the medical community and patient families to make noise and be heard – raising awareness and
educating the public about these diseases locally and across the nation.
Audience
Anyone can participate in Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis, including people of all ages and fitness levels. The North Texas
Chapter events are marketed to individuals and families throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington Metroplex (the largest
metropolitan area in Texas and the fourth-largest in the US). Participants are encouraged to form teams of family, friends
and co-workers to build a united front and raise funds and awareness. Physicians, nurses and allied health professionals
are urged to form their own teams, as well as to help market the event to colleagues and patients.
Impact
The need is critical: More than 1.4 million Americans suffer from Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and other
digestive diseases, affecting one in 200 Americans. Funds raised by Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis support the
research, patient education, advocacy and public awareness activities of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation.
Research: Since its inception, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation has invested approximately $125 million in research.
The organization has played a role in every major scientific breakthrough for Crohn’s and colitis, from generating data
that has contributed to the development of new therapies to the discovery of the first gene for Crohn’s disease.
Patient education: Each year, another 30,000 people learn that they have Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Since 1967, our organization has provided innovative education programs and materials to patients nationwide.
Chapters also offer a host of support services at the local level. Recently, we launched the Information Resource
Center, a professionally-staffed hotline that provides up-to-date information to patients and families.
Advocacy: On Capitol Hill, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation is the voice of people with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative
colitis. We advocate public policy positions that accelerate progress toward the cure of these illnesses.
Corporate Participation
Corporate support is critical to the success of Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis, but sponsoring or forming a team is also a
