Richard Smith-Bingham, Nesta, UK; how Nesta is working with creative industries in the UK?

Nesta: During 5 years it is setting up an basis for ideas, but the follow-up was missing.
Money comes from national lottery; spotting and promoting talent in the art and creative sector.
Early investment in new projects in a wide range of disciplines,
Non financial investment; mentoring, specialist training, tailored to individual needs of a project.
Task Improving creative level in the UK by pioneering and learning in Nesta; tol distribute this
knowledge to the industries.

Nesta publishes studies on investing in creative industries and how to invest in new creative
business and the role of higher education in encouraging the entrepreneurialism of creative

-2 residential components and ongoing support (2 x 10 days with professionals); ongoing workshops

-Biggest challenges in set up and current?
Beginning sheer wit of intervening in the sector and making a difference in a different way.
Do models responds to the real world; think about exit strategy for Nesta so other
people/organizations can take things a step further.
-How about political support and long run expectations?
Labour was and is backing up the initiative (dept. of culture). What about the position when new
conservative government would not support the initiative
-Other economical criteria?
Not only economic growth but broader social issues. Fellowship programme is debated. Difficult to
measure how much fellowships contribute to individual development.
-The way the government supports Creative Industry is roughly the same as other organizations
stimulate other industries?
How do you describe creative industries? For creative industry you have to use other strategies than
in business; using another language that creative people understand. At the same time as an
investor you need to have the credibility for other investors and you need to have a serious business
model and a proposition. Workers in creative industries don't need to be experts on tax but have to
know where to get the right advise

Incubator programme for ICT and new media businesses.
The Waag Society prototypes are new developments; healthcare, education, cultural heritage
institutes and arts. How can people be empowered by technology. To create a huge network in
technology, companies, cultural funding strategies etc.
Waag Society should not be growing but put effort in networks and creative people after they finish
their educational programme.
Context for starting Media Guild
-Coalition of the cultural sector, creative companies and knowledge institutes; recognized by
-KPN, Endemol, LogicaCMG, Syntens, TNO, Nederland Kennisland, Waag Society, Submarine,
Premsela, Media Republic, Virtueel Platform, UvA, HvA, UvU, HvU, ANMI, ABNAmro etc.

Creative techno starters; selection based in personal project and development plan; proof of
competence, space for 1 year, membership forever, 30 workstations/cubicles/high quality
technical infrastructure, use of AV studios.
Guidance and advice of Masters, innovation and research programme, 1000 hours own project, 600
hours in Media Guild programme ism universities.
