Festival Participants
Heidi Álvarez is Associate Professor of Music at Western Kentucky University, where she teaches flute, flute choir, and music
theory. She is the Treasurer and a board member for the Flute Society of Kentucky. Additionally, she plays second flute in the
Orchestra Kentucky Bowling Green and is a mother of three. Dr. Álvarez, an avid supporter of new music, released two compact disc
recordings in 2007 that feature commissioned flute chamber music: Flute Chamber Music by Michael Kallstrom on the Centaur Label
(CRC 2911) and The Light Wraps You on the MSR Classics Label (MS 1217). Dr. Álvarez holds degrees in flute performance from
The Oberlin Conservatory of Music (B.M.) and from The Florida State University (M.M. and D.M.). Her former flute teachers
include Michel Debost, Kathleen Chastain, and Charles DeLaney. Prior to her appointment in Bowling Green, Dr. Álvarez taught
flute and numerous courses in music theory and musicology at California State University, Chico.
Julie Baker is a doctoral student at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatoryof Music where she studies with Bradley
Garner. Ms. Baker received her Master of Music from CCM as well and studied with Jack Wellbaum. Ms. Baker earned a
Bachelors degree from the University of Texas at Austin where she studied with Marianne Gedigian and Karl Kraber. Ms.
Baker was a semi-finalist in the Frank Bowen competition (2005) and a finalist in the Maine International Competition
(2009). Ms. Baker has Performed in the masterclasses of William Bennett, Ransom Wilson, Jill Felber, Joan Voorhees,
Randy Bowman and Amy Porter.
Casey Clyde is a senior at Lakota East High School in Liberty Township , OH. She is first chair in her schools top band and principal
flute in the Cincinnati Youth Symphony Orchestra. Casey was awarded first place in the 2009 Dayton Philharmonic HS Concerto,
2009 Blue Ash Symphomy Concerto and the Central Ohio Flute Asso. 2008 Junior and 2010 Senior High Divisions. A former student
of Leesa Alford she currently studies with Jasmine Choi. Casey plans to pursue a BM in flute performance.
Gordon Cole joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky in 1976 following three years of teaching at the University of New
Hampshire and three years as a member of The United States Army Band, Washington, D.C. For many years he performed with the
McCracken Wind Quintet, the BizetTrio (fl,bsn,pn) and the Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra, Door Co. WI. His principle teacher
was his father, Robert Cole, a former member of the Philadelphia Orchestra and professor of flute at the University of Wisconsin-
Madison. Gordon, Kris, Nathan and Robert Cole can be heard on their CD Cole Cuts-Three Generations.
Harpist Sarah Croker maintains an active performance schedule with the Tupelo (MS), Meridian (MS) and Tuscaloosa (AL)
Symphonies. A DMA candidate at the University of Alabama, she is also a member of the Huxford Symphony and Contemporary
Ensemble. She has participated in summer study at Brevard and currently studies with Judith Sullivan, principal harpist of the
Alabama Symphony.
Carrie Ellis is a senior at Boyle County High School in Danville, KY. She has been playing flute for six years and is currently
studying under the direction of Jana Flygstad. She has been a member of the 11th district KMEA All-District Band for five years, and
a member of KMEA All-State Band for three years. Carrie is involved with not only her band at school but has also been in Centre
College's flute ensemble, CentreFlutes, since her sophomore year, and is involved with the Advocate Brass Band located
in Danville. She is also a 2010 Governor's School for the Arts alumni. Carrie hopes to major in music in college and continue playing
flute in the future.
Jana Flygstad earned her Master’s in Flute Performance from Northwestern University where she studied with Walfrid Kujala. She
was also a student of Gordon Cole at the University of Kentucky where she earned her BMME. Flygstad has been a prize winner in
both the Flute Society of Kentucky’s Young Artist Competition and Piccolo Competition. In 2007 she was a finalist in the Chicago
Young Artist Competition. Currently she enjoys being a mother to a 16 month old as well as Visiting Professor of Flute at Centre
College and Georgetown College. Flygstad also performs with various ensembles in the Central Kentucky area.
Melissa Foster is a sophomore at Eastern Kentucky University where she performs in the orchestra and wind ensemble. She studies
flute with Dr. Kristen Kean and is double majoring in music performance and music industry. She previously studied with Dr. Nina
Perlove at Northern Kentucky University. In 2010 Melissa was a collegiate finalist in the Central Ohio Flute Association contest.
Isabel Lepanto Gleicher attended the prestigious LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts where she was a
winner of the 2008 Concerto Competition. In 2010 Isabel was the Collegiate Artist Competition winner of the Kentucky Flute
Festival. Currently she studies with Dr. Tara Helen O’Connor at SUNY Purchase. She has performed with various ensembles in
Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Symphony Space and Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Teca Gondim, pianist, is working toward a DMA degree at the University of Alabama under Mrs. Amanda Penick. In 1995 she joined
the faculty of the Federal University of Bahia in Brazil, where she had received both her BM and MM degrees in piano performance.
Along with her husband Tota Portela she has performed in Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, France and the United States. Together they
recorded two CD’s, “Fim de Tarde” and “Catedral”.
Leanne Hampton is a junior at the University of Central Arkansas and a student of Dr. Carolyn Brown. She is the assistant principal
of the Conway Symphony Orchestra and a member of the UCA Honors College. She has performed in master classes at the
Tanglewood Institute with Doriot Dwyer, the Midsouth Flute festival with Lorna McGhee and Denis Bouriakov, and the Aria Institute
with Amy Porter and Bonita Boyd.
Daniel Hollister is a freshman at Florida State University double majoring in Music education and Accounting. He studies with David
Graham and Eva Amsler. Along with his interest in flute Daniel dabbles in composition and conducting. In his spare time he enjoys
spending time with his niece and nephew, participating in musical theatre and blogging.
Kathleen Karr is the Principal Flutist of the Louisville Orchestra and a flute professor at the University of Louisville. A former
member of the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and the Evansville Philharmonic, she has also performed with the Chautauqua
Symphony Orchestra and the Orquestra Sinfonica da Mineria in Mexico City. She is a founding member of the Kentucky Center
Chamber Players and a member of the Louisville Bach Society Orchestra. Kathleen received her Bachelor of Music degree from
Northwestern University and her Master of Music degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She is a member of
the Board of Directors of the Flute Society of Kentucky.
Kristen Kean joined the faculty of Eastern Kentucky University in 2003. A graduate of Boston University (BM), Southeastern
Louisiana University (MM), and Louisiana State University (DMA), her teachers included Doriot Anthony Dwyer and Katherine
Kemler. She has performed in master class for Julius Baker, Peter Lloyd, Leone Buyse, Jim Walker, Julia Bogorad, and Torkil Bye.
As an orchestral musician, she has played with the Boston and Louisiana Philharmonics, the Arcadiana and Baton Rouge Symphonies,
and was the principal flutist with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Monterrey (OSUANL) Mexico. She is currently the principal flutist in the
Owensboro Symphony. Dr. Kean is the Secretary and a member of the Board of Directors for the Flute Society of Kentucky.
Sunghye Kim is from Busan, Korea. She is a graduate student at Campbellsville University and previously graduated from Kosin
University in Korea. At CU, she is the principal flutist in the Orchestra and is a member of Quarteto Gracioso. She has been selected
to be the principal flutist in the 2011 Intercollegiate Orchestra and was the principal piccolo player in the same group in 2010.
Abby Lanham is from Lebanon, Kentucky. She is a junior, Music Education major at Campbellsville University. At CU, she is the
flute/piccolo section leader of the Tiger Marching Band, the principal flutist in the Concert Band, a member of the Orchestra, and is a
member of Quarteto Gracioso. She has been selected to perform in the 2011 Intercollegiate Band.
Lindsay Leach is pursuing a DMA at CCM in Cincinnati; she holds an Artist Diploma from the Royal Academy of Music as well
as BM and MM degrees from the Peabody Conservatory. Her 2008 premier solo recording “One of a Kind” was sponsored by the
NC Regional Artist Grant, and her recent appearances include: 2009 and 2005 Jean-Pierre Rampal, 2008 Frank Bowen, 2007
Young Artist Mid-South, 2007 Maxence Larrieu, and 2007 NFA Baroque Artist competitions. She was one of two American representatives in
the Beijing Nicolet International Flute Competition in China this spring. Lindsay plays with the Long Bay
Symphony and has been featured with the Fayetteville Symphony, the Moore County Wind Symphony, and on the Friends of
Music at Methodist University series.
Lisa McArthur is a Professor of Flute and Music Theory at Campbellsville University. Dr. McArthur was selected as the
College/University Educator of the Year by the Kentucky Music Educators Association in 2001 and she is the current President of the
FSK. Her flute ensemble arrangements and her book about Gary Schocker are published by Falls House Press.
Seth Allyn Morris has won First Prize at the Myrna W. Brown Competition, the James Pappoutsakis Competition, and both the
Kentucky Flute Festival’s Toung Artist and Collegiate Competitions. As an orchestral flutist he has performed in the Detroit
Symphony, the Arbor Opera Theater, the American Institute of Musical Studies Festival Orchestra in Graz, and is currently piccoloist
of the Western Michigan Symphony. While persuing a DMA at the University of Michigan, Seth serves as Graduate Student
Instructor for the flute studio. He holds degrees from the New England Conservatory and the University of Kentucky. His principal

Whitney O’Neal is Instructor of Woodwinds at Stillman College and Visiting Professor of Flute at Mississippi State University (fall
2010). She has been a member of the NFA Professional flute Choir and the Delta and Huxford Symphony Orchestras. She is a DMA
candidate at the University of Alabama, where she is also a graduate assistant in Musicology. Her principal teachers include Diane
Boyd Schultz and Joe Bonner.
Maria Osbourn, 11, attends St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Grade School in Louisville, KY. Her flute lessons began 1½ years ago with
Mrs. Amy King and Maria enjoys playing in church, school and local Nursing homes. Maria sings in the school choir, performs in
drama club and has taken dance lessons for seven years.
Miles Osland has distinguished himself as an educator, recording and performing artist, author, arranger and composer. Currently the
Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Saxophone at the University of Kentucky, he has appeared throughout North, South
America, Europe and Asia as a guest conductor and performing artist for Avanti flutes, Selmer saxophones and Rico reeds. His
compositions and arrangements have been recognized and supported by fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and
the Kentucky Arts Council. Sea Breeze Jazz Records has submitted ten of his recordings for Grammy nominations. Six books
authored by Mr. Osland are available through Dorn and Warner Brothers Publications and his scholarly work (which includes over 75
published articles and reviews on saxophone technique and jazz improvisation) can be found in a variety of publications including
Downbeat, Jazz Educators Journal, Jazz Player Magazine, Saxophone Journal, Selmer Woodwind Notes and Windplayer Magazine.
The Osland/Dailey Duo consists of Miles Osland, Professor of Saxophone and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Kentucky
on woodwinds, and Raleigh Dailey, Professor of Jazz Piano at UK on keyboards. The Duo specializes in performing original and
standard jazz compositions. They have toured extensively throughout the Midwest and recently returned from a musical cultural
exchange tour of Ecuador sponsored by the Kentucky Arts Council. Other international appearances include performances in Hong
Kong, China, Thailand and Italy. Miles and Raleigh are both past recipients of the Kentucky Arts Council’s Al Smith Fellowship for
excellence in composition.
Tota Portela is a native of Brazil, where he is Principal flute at the Federal University of Bahia, and Assistant to Principal at the State
Orchestra of Bahia. Since 2006 he has been studying with Dr. Diane Schultz at the University of Alabama, where he received his MM.
A recipient of the Narramore Fellowship, Tota is working toward a DMA degree.
Kate Sanders began playing flute in 2008. She has played in 6th - 8th grade band at Jefferson County Traditional Middle
School and has been first chair flute for the past 2 years. She has participated in KMEA for the past 2 years and has received
a distinguished rating on her performances. This November she she played in the All-County Middle School band. She studies
flute with Jana Flygstad.
Denis Santos is from Ceará, Brazil. He is a doctoral student at the University of Kentucky and an instructor at Campbellsville
University. He previously completed degrees from the University of Ceará and CU. In addition to playing flute, he also teaches
Theory, plays viola in the CU Orchestra, and directs the Flute Ensemble.
Aaron Sexton is a Senior Music Performance major at the University of Kentucky where he studies with Professor Gordon Cole. He
has been a member of the UK Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, as well as the Wind Ensemble since he has been at the
University. In December Aaron performed a World Premiere Opera in New York City injunction with the DiCapo Opera Theatre,
which has been recorded under New Albany Records label. Some of Aaron’s other performance venues include: a tour through the
People’s Republic of China, Carnegie Hall (twice), and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.
Andrew Sheffield received his bachelor of music in piano performance from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and his
master of music, also in piano performance, from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, where he served as a graduate
teaching assistant for accompanying. His teachers include Frank Weinstock, John McIntyre, and Robert Weirich. He has performed
as a solo recitalist for the Artist Presentation Society of St. Louis and as a collaborative pianist for the Kansas City Cello Clinic and
ClarinetFest of the International Clarinet Society. Andrew is currently an adjunct instructor of music and staff accompanist at the
Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, where he is also pursuing a master of divinity in worship leadership.
Keri Shelton, a junior at Eastern High School, currently resides in Middletown KY where she plays flute in the Eastern High School
Symphonic Band. Her music teachers include Mike Arthur and Jana Flygstad. She was chosen for the KMEA All-State concert Band in 2009
& awarded third chair for the All-State Symphonic Band in 2010. Keri has received distinguished ratings the past 5 years in the Solo and
Ensemble for the Jefferson County Public School. She was runner up in the Flute Society of Kentucky 2008 Festival Junior Soloist
Competition. Keri was accepted into the 2010 Governor's School for the Arts where she spent three weeks at Transylvania University this
summer.
Hilary Shepard teaches flute and directs the flute choir at Fort hays State University in Hays KS. She is currently principal flute with
the Hays Symphony and has performed as soloist on several occasions. Hilary is a graduate of Temple University (MM) and the
University of Houston (BA). Her primary teachers were John Thorn, Cynthia Meyers and David Cramer.

Lisa Sherwood is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a BM degree in vocal education. She has performed, directed,
accompanied and arranged music for adult and children’s musicals both in Community Theatre, High School and University theatre
productions, as well as teaching music in public and private schools in her home state, Michigan and in Ohio. Lisa began playing flute
in 2001 and performs composes and arranges music for a variety of flute combinations. She is Director and Conductor of The Flute
Symphony of Lexington and is also Worship leader for St. Patrick’s Anglican Church, Lexington, KY.
Cristina Soares is from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. She is a graduate student at Campbellsville University and graduated from
Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. In Brazil, she was a HS music teacher and also worked with deaf students. She is a
member of the CU Orchestra and Quarteto Gracioso.
Donald Speer, Professor of Piano, has been a member of the music faculty at Western Kentucky University since 1991, where his
responsibilities include applied lessons for college majors, pedagogy, accompanying, class piano, and director/teacher of the WKU
Keyboard Development program for pre-college students. He is also a member of the summer faculty for the Kentucky Governor’s
School for the Arts. In addition to an extensive performance schedule in collaboration with WKU music faculty, Dr. Speer has
appeared in recital with such renowned musicians as Steven Mead, Frank Morelli, Vince DiMartino and Paul Basler. He has also
premiered and recorded numerous works by contemporary composers, including Michael Kallstrom, Susan Kander, Bev Lewis, Lewis
Neilson, and Rodney Rogers. He has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe as a member of the Fiala/Speer duo. In 2009, the
duo premiered “Postcards from America” and “Fundy Temperaments” for oboe and piano at the International Double Reed Society
Conference in Birmingham, England. Dr. Speer has served as President of the Kentucky Music Teachers Association and Southern
Division Coordinator of Collegiate and Chamber Music Competitions for the Music Teachers National Association. He was the
recipient of Western's 2004 Award for Teaching in the Potter College of Arts and Letters, and was named the KMTA Teacher of the
Year in 2005. He holds the Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Louisiana College, the Master of Music in Performance
from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, and the Ph.D. in Music Education from Louisiana State University. Former piano
teachers include Mary Ann Crump, Ruth Slenczynska, Linda Perry, and Jack Guerry.
Paul Thompson teaches flute at South East Missouri State University. Previously he taught at Murray State, Colgate and Cornell
Universities and the Wisconsin Conservatory. He recently performed at the 2010 NFA Convention in Anaheim CA. He has also
performed in France and China
Erin Helgeson Torres is a fellowship recipient and studies with Professor Katherine Borst Jones. She serves as principle flutist
of the Ohio State Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony and as the flute studio Teaching Assistant. She has performed with
the WASBE International Youth Wind Orchestra and was the first place winner of the Women in Music Columbus Competition
and the Central Ohio Flute Association Young Artists Competition. Erin recently performed Frank Martin’s Ballade as the 2010 Concerto
Competition winner with the University Orchestra. Erin looks forward to performing with the New Sousa Band on
their upcoming tour to China.
Sarah Tran is a sophomore at the University of North Texas, pursuing a BM degree with Terri Sundberg and is a member of the UNT
Concert Orchestra. She was a winner of the 2010 NFA Master Class Performers competition and also received first place at the 2008
Floot Fire Solo Competition. Sarah is a four year Texas Flute Society Outstanding Soloist.
Erika Voss is a Music and Psychology double major at Centre College in Danville, KY where she studies flute with Jana Flygstad.
She is principal flute in the Centre Orchestra and enjoys playing in the Centre Flutes ensemble. Her passion for the flute began
in high school while she was a member of the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra.
Catherine Watwood is currently a freshman at Western Kentucky University at Bowling Green Kentucky. She currently performs in
the Western Kentucky University Orchestra and symphonic band as co-principal and second chair respectively. Additionally, she has
performed in master classes with Keith Underwood, Jennifer Mazzoni, Mary Kay Fink, Katherine Borst Jones and Michel Debost.
Catherine plans to pursue a graduate degree in flute performance.
Catie White is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. She is currently a sophomore at the University of Alabama, studying with Diane
Boyd Schultz. She held the positions of principal flute of the Alabama Youth Orchestra and University of Alabama Symphonic band,
and currently serves as principal flute of the newly founded Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra, and second flute of the University
of Alabama Huxford Symphony Orchestra. She also performs frequently with her woodwind quintet, and is a member of the
University of Alabama Capstone Chamber Orchestra.

Sam Williams is first year flute student at the University of Louisville and studies with Kathleen Karr. He has performed with many
different ensembles, including the Nashville Curb Youth Symphony Orchestra, and KMEA all-state band for three years. Sam was the
state winner of the KMTA senior woodwinds competition and Honorable Mention soloist of the Southern division MYNA woodwind
competition. His former teacher were Jessica Carmichael and Dr. Charles W. Smith.
Farah Zolghadr is a doctoral student at the University of Miami, where she is a Mancini Fellow and Teaching Assistant. While at the
University of Nevada-Las Vsgas (MM’09) Farah won the concerto competition and was named outstanding Graduate Student (2009).
Her former teachers include Jennifer Grim and Andrea Graves.
