THE THREE Rs of Bonnycastle School
 At Bonnycastle School we:

• 1. Take care of others.
• 2. Take care of ourselves.
• 3. Take care of our school.
Why did we decide to have a recess
                afternoon?

• 1. Staff noticed disrespectful behavior occurring
  at times during recess games.
• 2. Staff often couldn’t solve conflicts as they
  didn’t know the rules.
• 3. Children sometimes got into trouble as they
either didn’t know how to play a game or
couldn’t find an activity they wanted to play.
• 4. We wanted to apply for the In Motion grant to
get some extra money and thought this was a
  good way to do it.
• So…
• A committee met and decided to have an
entire afternoon dedicated to teaching and
reinforcing the rules of many recess
  activities.
• It happened quickly! We had less than 2
  weeks to get everything organized.
• We assigned jobs to certain staff
  members.
• Groups- We divided the entire school into four
K-2 groups and eight Grade 3-6 groups.
• Activities- We picked 12 recess activities that
would be appropriate for each age group.
• Snack- We contacted stores and Sobey’s gave
us a great price on a healthy recess snack-
  apples!
• Recess Booklet- We found rules for all the
activities and compiled them in a recess booklet.
• Schedules- We worked out a master and group
  schedules.
• Equipment- We planned what equipment we
already had and what we needed to purchase.
• Sign Up Sheet- We developed a sign up sheet
for staff to select which stations they would be
  running.
• Information- We sent a memo to all staff to
inform them about this event and a letter home
  to parents.
• We prayed for nice weather as it was already
October and we wanted to do this before the
  snow hit.
                    GROUPS
• We sent around a sign up sheet and teachers divided
their students into groups. Groups A-D were K-2 groups.
  Group A Group B Group C Group D
   Arham Anup Caitlyn Emily
   Starr Simeon Gurjot Asma
   Etc. 18-19 students per group

• One of the grade K-2 teachers stayed with these groups
and led them from station to station.
• Groups E-L (8 groups) were grade 3-6 groups and also
had 18-20 students per group. These groups were led
by two grade 6 students leaders.
                  ACTIVITIES
• We then selected 12 activities we thought would be
appropriate for each level. We would have liked to have
added tetherball but they were all broken because the
  students weren’t using them properly!
1. CIRCLE DODGEBALL
• Dodgeball game played by K-2 and 3-6

  decided to provide a
  healthy snack for the
  recess break.
  Sobey’s gave us a
  very good price on
  apples!
        RECESS BOOKLET
• Staff then compiled all the rules for all the
different activities and put them into a
booklet that is in every classroom. The
  teachers running the stations were
expected to review the rules for their
  station.
