COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Practical Training in providing distinctively Christian, one-on-one care giving is offered in this
course. Students will be trained in a local church setting in the skills required in Christian care
giving. Emphasis will be on providing an organized system of ongoing care for the local
congregation.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will be exposed to the Stephen Ministry system of lay Christian care,
and will observe how this ministry functions within a church congregation
(MACU School of Ministry competency #4, Leadership, revised spring 2005).
Each student will develop Christian caregiving skills such as: reflective
listening, confidentiality, referral parameters, setting care boundaries, and
empathy (MACU School of Ministry Competency #5, Pastoral Care, revised
spring 2005).
Each student will be able to know when to refer to a mental health care
professional, and to which agency or professional they should refer.
The student will be given opportunity to put into practice skills learned
through role-play and real-life settings.
Each student will be challenged to develop an assertive lifestyle based on the
biblical truth of Ephesians 4:15.
Each student will practice genuine Christian compassion and concern with the
fellow classmates, lay members of the host congregation.
ATTENDANCE:
Appropriate grasp of this subject requires active participation in all class
sessions. Absolutely necessary absences will be evaluated in keeping with the
1
guidelines of the MACU catalog and the Stephen Ministry Leadership Team of
Crossings Community Church. Basically stated, students are expected to be
present for each class session. The instructor must be informed of all
excused absences, in writing, at least one class session prior to the absence
in question. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class session.
Tardy students will be responsible for informing the instructor at the end of
the class period in question, otherwise the student will be considered absent.
Three tardy arrivals may be considered as an absence. Because of the critical
nature of the on-site training involved in this course absences may be
considered only in emergency cases.
METHOD OF EVALUATION:
A variety of tools will be used in order to evaluate the student’s grasp of the
course material:
The most important evaluating factor will be the student’s attendance in
training sessions. All sessions, unless previously arranged are mandatory for
a passing grade.
The student’s grade will also be evaluated on the basis of the timely reading
of assigned materials. All materials must be completed before the end of the
semester.
Participation in training sessions and appropriate attitude and decorum will
also be considerations.
Students may be required to write a three page observation and summary
paper at the end of the semester describing the experience and detailing
their own understanding of the Stephen Ministry system of congregational
care. His document will be typed, double-spaced, in MLA format, with
appropriate cover page. The due date will be during finals week, December
13-16, 2005.
