My Fellow Lions & Leos

It is indeed a pleasure to serve you as President of the Lions Club of Bridgetown for the year 2009-2010. I approach
this task ahead with much enthusiasm as we embrace our theme for this year “Beyond Sight: Creating a Vision for the
Future”.

It is my hope that we work in harmony together and increase the level of visibility of our club to the wider
community. Let us consolidate the successes we have achieved over the past years and blend them with a fresh
approach to serve the less fortunate.

I urge you to see beyond the immediate challenges that we are facing today and recognize that together we can
aspire, together we can achieve.

Lion Judy O. Morris MJF

                                          Greetings From The Zone

It is with tremendous pleasure that I greet the Lions Club of Bridgetown and its Board of Directors at the commencement
of the Lionistic year, 2009-10. I look forward, in my capacity as Zone Chairperson, to our Club continuing its
distinguished tradition of service to our community under its theme “Beyond Sight: Creating a Vision for the Future.”

I trust that all of our clubs in the Zone will use the contemporary opportunities which exist to forge closer associations
with each other by undertaking more joint projects, meetings and activities than we have carried out in the past.

I wish Lion President Judy Morris, MJF and all my Fellow club members’ great success in achieving our laudable goals
during this lionistic year as we seek to fulfil our Zone’s objective of “Service for Our Community’s future.”

                             Extract from President’s Acceptance Speech

With profound gratitude and humility, it is a true honor and privilege to stand before you on this special occasion to
address you at this time. I am overwhelmed that you have reposed such confidence by electing me to serve as President of
the Lions Club of Bridgetown for the year 2009-2010. Let me express my thanks to those Lions who have nurtured me
over the last seven (7) years and it is only fitting that I take up the mantel of leadership through service this year.

Though we are in the midst of an economic recession, today we still face a vast ocean of possibilities and opportunities to
serve the less fortunate. It is my hope dream and prayer that we transform these possibilities and opportunities into
stories of success and triumph. Helen Keller has challenged us Lions to be “Knights of the Blind, in the crusade against
darkness”. She said and I quote, “Happiness cannot come from without, it must come from within. It is not what we see
and touch or that which others do for us which makes us happy, it is that which we think and feel and do, first for the
other fellow and then for ourselves”.

Support can only be accomplished if Leadership focuses its projects around a specific theme and identify goals and
objectives to charter the journey.
It is in keeping with this vision that I have chosen as my theme for the upcoming Lionistic year, “Beyond Sight: Creating
a Vision for the Future”.

Fellow Lions, it is my determination to work in close co-operation and collaboration with humanitarian agencies in the
community with the intention of fostering goodwill, cohesiveness and common approach of the greater good of the
community at large. Let us bear in mind that we, Lions, have to keep pace with the rapidly changing world and seriously
commit ourselves to deal with emerging problems, trends and ever increasing challenges that confront mankind."

My signature project and primary goal will be to partner with the Irving Wilson School in providing specialized materials
and equipment for the visually impaired and the hearing impaired. There is a dying need to improve the lot of the blind
and the deaf in the country and it is the hope that this would assist children to cope in the normal world through language
development for total communication. We will continue that partnership with the school which was conceptualized when
the school was established in 1968 by former Lion Irving Wilson.

I do not know what every club’s success story will be. Nor do I know what every club will accomplish. But I do know that
in every corner of the world, people are waiting for someone to give them hope. This hope will be embraced by our
service to the community and it is here that I identify the cores areas for the President’s programme for 2009-2010:

Beyond Sight: Creating a Vision for the future Page 6
Sight Conversation focusing on the visually impaired, Environment, Health and Social Services, the Leo Club
Programme, Information Technology and Public Relations, Membership, Recruitment, Retention and Growth, New
Funding, Partnership and Networking.

Life is always moving forward; nothing ever remains the same. To a greater or lesser degree, we are continually being
transported, whether suddenly or gradually into the new, the different, the unexpected, or the untried. Yet most people
don't manage change effectively and positively. Lions let us be agents for change. Our projects should give us a leg up
and touch people’s lives in a deep and lasting way. Let us continue to grow, young and old in harmony ready to face the
challenge.

To all incoming Presidents, Board of Directors and members, welcome to another year and may you have a rewarding and
productive year.

Let us remember everyone can be great because every one of us can serve. Let us remember that anytime we tolerate
mediocrity in others it increases our own mediocrity. Because I draw my strength from God, I am bound to succeed. Lions
put your trust in God and success shall find you.

Helen Keller said and I quote, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” I know the task ahead of me maybe herculean
but I take solace in Peter Marshall who says, “No one achieves greatness without being of service – the measurement of life
is not in its duration, but in its donation. Every one of us can be great because every one of us can serve.”

TO SHOW my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I
may merit a reputation for quality of service.

TO SEEK success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no
profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or
because of questionable acts on my part.

TO REMEMBER that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be
loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.

WHENEVER a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to
     resolve such doubt against myself.

TO HOLD friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on
account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing
but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.

ALWAYS to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state and my community,
and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act and deed. To give them freely of my time,
     labor, and means.

TO AID others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my
     substance to the needy.

TO BE CAREFUL with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.

    Tuna Pot Pie
This delicious tuna pie is made with tuna, homemade creamy sauce, mixed vegetables, seasoning, and
    pastry.

    Ingredients:

 1/4 cup butter
 1/2 cup chopped onion
 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
 1/2 to 1 teaspoon salt
 1/4 teaspoon pepper
 1/4 teaspoon garlic and herb seasoning blend or dash garlic and dried parsley
 1/4 teaspoon paprika
 dash dried thyme, crumbled
 2 cups milk
 1 large can (12 ounces) tuna, drained and flaked, or 2 small (6 to 7 ounce) cans
 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables, thawed
 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
 pastry for single 9-inch pie

    Preparation:

In a large saucepan melt butter; add onion and cook over medium-low heat until tender. Blend in flour.
Add 1/2 teaspoon salt, the pepper, herb seasoning blend, paprika, and thyme. Gradually add the milk,
stirring constantly. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture is bubbling and thickened. Fold in the tuna,
vegetables, Worcestershire sauce, and cheese. Taste and add more salt and seasoning if necessary.
Pour mixture into a 2-quart baking dish.

Preheat oven to 425°. Roll out pastry to fit top of baking dish. With a sharp knife, cut several slits in
the top crust. Place pastry on the baking dish; flute edges. Place the baking dish on a baking sheet in
the oven. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until crust is browned and mixture is bubbly.

    Serves 4 to 6.

Brief History of Lionism in the Caribbean

(adapted from http://www.lions60a.org/service/umland/index.html)

One can say that Lionism began in Sub-District 60A with the formation of the Paramaribo Central Lions Club in May

1957. As the enthusiasm grew in Suriname, the idea rapidly spread to Guyana with the establishment of the

Georgetown Lions Club in August 1960. A year later, Barbados accepted the challenge when the Bridgetown Lions

Club (formerly the Barbados Lions Club) was formed. Together, the three (3) clubs were given recognition by Lions

International as a Provisional District “P”, by virtue of having less than twenty (20) clubs registered.

Trinidad and Tobago came into the equation in May 1962 with the formation of the Lions Club of Port of Spain Central

(formerly The Trinidad North Lions Club). A year later, Trinidad and Tobago joined District “P” and with the proliferation

of clubs throughout the Caribbean, full District status was granted in 1969, with the first elected District Governor of

District 60 emerging in the person of John Fernandes Jr. from Guyana. At the Convention in Jamaica in 1980, the

Caribbean achieved Multiple District status having attained the required thirty-five (35) clubs and one thousand two

hundred and fifty (1,250) Lion members. Consequently, Sub-districts 60A and 60B were established. The first elected

Governor of the Sub-District 60A was Gopichan Ramsarran of Trinidad and Tobago. Today, there are 11 Lions Clubs

and 4 Leo Clubs in Suriname; 19 Lions Clubs and 4 Leo Clubs in Guyana; and 28 Lions Clubs and 10 Leo Clubs in

Trinidad and Tobago.

Through the initiative of the Suriname lions, the “rotation system” was introduced to elect District Governors equitably

among the three (3) countries of Sub-District 60A. Between 1980 and 2007, Suriname and Guyana provided the Sub-

District with nine (9) Governors each, while Trinidad and Tobago produced ten (10) Governors.

It is instructive, that with the change in the International Policy for the inclusion of female members into the Clubs in

1987, women have made their statements both in membership and contribution to leadership. Of significance, was the

election to office of District Governors Maike Sterm Van Leeuwen of Suriname (1997-1998), Alison Sloane-Seale of

Trinidad and Tobago (2004-2005), Cynthia Foort (2006-2007) and Maria Byron of Trinidad and Tobago (2007-2008).

Both District Governors Sloane-Seale and Foort have been elevated to the positions of Chairmen of the Council of

Governors of Multiple District 60.

Sub-District 60A has also provided leadership at the International level in the persons of Past International Directors

Louis Chung of Guyana and Terence Boswell Inniss of Trinidad and Tobago.

You Must Be Joking…
An auditor is hard at work auditing a manufacturing plant. He spots one
worker at the end of the shift, that worker is always carrying a wheelbarrow
covered with an opaque cloth. The auditor is certain something is fishy.

He asks the security to check the wheelbarrow. After many surprise checks,
security finds nothing. On the last day of the audit the auditor goes to the
worker and asks, "Alright, I give up. I know you are taking something. I
