MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO
Weathering the Mortgage Crisis
The mortgage crisis has affected many, if not all, homeowners in one way or another. And we know our members are feeling the pinch
of the struggling economy. In fact, over 1.5 million properties in the U.S. had a foreclosure filing from January 2009 to July 2009*.
FAA First is here to help. We don’t want you to lose your home due to a foreclosure action. Call us at the first sign that you may not be
able to make your monthly mortgage payment. We can even connect you with BALANCE, a free financial education and counseling
service available to FAA First members. A counselor at BALANCE can assess your current financial situation, suggest possible
budgetary adjustments you can make, and discuss options for your mortgage and how to approach your lender.
If you find yourself worrying about making your next monthly payment, here are some steps you can take.
Start by comparing your monthly expenses to your monthly income and identifying some changes in spending habits that you can
make to ensure you’re not spending more than you’re earning.
Then contact your lender as soon as possible once you realize you’ll still have difficulty making payments. Lenders don’t want to
foreclose on your house. There are options available to help you through difficult financial times. Give your lender the opportunity to
discuss your options with you. Possible options include modifying the terms of the existing loan, making lower payments for a period
of time, repaying delinquent payments through a repayment plan, refinancing, or even selling the house.
Oftentimes, consumers wait until it’s too late for the lender to help and the damage to their credit score is done. Take charge early and
you’ll have more options available to help save your credit score and your home. As always, we welcome your call and are here to
help you get back on your feet.
To speak to a counselor at BALANCE directly, call 888.456.2227. And for more information on how to avoid foreclosure on your home,
visit www.hud.gov and click on ‘Avoid Foreclosure.’

Glad You Asked
Do you have a rewards program with your FAA First VISA® Credit Card?
Yes, we do. The FAAst Flight Rewards program earns one (1) point for every dollar on
purchases you make with your FAA First Platinum VISA®. There are no restrictions on
the airline, hotel, vehicle rental, cruise or travel package you choose. Best of all, there
are no blackout dates, so you can use your travel points during the holiday season
to visit your family and friends. Use your FAA First Platinum VISA® for your holiday
shopping and earn points toward your next vacation! To learn more about FAAst Flight
Rewards, visit www.faafirst.org.
Sir George Cayley, a nineteenth century English baronet, is remembered as the
“father of aeronautics.” He conducted the first real experiments designed to
uncover the basic principles of flight. He discovered that the arched shape of a
bird’s wing was one of the secrets of bird flight and reasoned that a similar shape on
a fixed-wing machine might likewise allow it to fly. Cayley designed, built, and flew
the world’s first model glider in 1804.
Don’t Let Identity Theft Spoil Your Holidays.
With the holiday season fast approaching, consumers are entering into the most active
spending period of the year. This is “high season” for identity theft with identity thieves
seeking to take advantage of shoppers. Skilled identity thieves may use a variety of
methods to get a hold of your information. Fortunately there are preventive measures
you can take to substantially reduce the chance of identity theft occurring. Below are some
pointers to help you keep your credit safe and sound:
• Use a single credit card to consolidate your purchasing. It is easier to monitor a single
statement for signs of fraud. Examine the charges on your credit card statements every
month when your bill arrives.
• Be sure to write “SEE ID” on the back of your credit card. This simple step can help to
foil thieves if the card is lost or stolen, and might even help to catch the thief if your card is taken.
• Shop on secure sites only. Stick to sites that you know are legitimate. Enter personal and financial information only when there is
a “lock” icon on the browser’s status bar and look for the URL to read “https” versus “http”.
• Watch out for emails that ask you to “verify” account information such as login and password or request a donation or assistance
for the less fortunate during the holidays, as well as fraudulent calls from scammers that seek to exploit consumer concerns over
fraud by seeming to offer fraud prevention assistance. Legitimate vendors will not ask for your login and password via email or on
• Be careful when using ATMs. Be aware of people behind you at the ATM, or anywhere else you swipe your card or enter your PIN.
As an FAA First member you have two programs to help you protect your identity. You have a complimentary access to BALANCE
Financial Fitness Program in our affiliate network where you can access educational materials and tools on preventing or recovering
from identity theft. We’ve also partnered with Deluxe ID TheftBlock®, a service that monitors and reports the activity on your credit
file, and warns you if anyone tries to open an account in your name. For only $4.49 a month you can sign up for Deluxe ID TheftBlock®
and start protecting your good credit and your name.
