Double Wing Offense
by Jeffrey M. Cziska
Why Run the Double Wing?
1. The Double Wing is easy to teach, easy to learn, putting players in position to win.
2. The best defense is a great offense. The Double Wing attack chews up yardage and
time. It is not unusual for opponents to only get the ball for five or six plays in a half.
3. The defense is always outnumbered at the point of attack. When they overload to
one side it is a touchdown for you. Most teams will put sometimes nine men on the line of
scrimmage. Break through to the second level and it is a touchdown.
4. Minimum play players will be able to get plenty of playing time. Last season, all 25 of
my Junior Varsity players saw significant playing time.
5. Will it get my players ready for “the next level”?
Simple answer is yes. Most of the players I coach usually do not know how to put
on their equipment, know the difference between left and right and have no clue how to get
in a stance, block or tackle. Never mind the X’s and O’s. It is a blessing to get incoming
players from the local youth programs.
6. Will this offense get them ready for college football?
Regardless of the system a player participates in, college recruiters know what to look
for, regardless of the offense. They know an athlete when they see one. Furthermore,
not to discourage any parents out there, but the chance of playing college football is
minimal, never mind making it to the NFL.
Chances of Playing Football in the NFL:
5.6% of high school seniors play football at an NCAA college (all divisions) 2% of
college seniors are drafted by NFL
.09% of high school seniors are drafted by NFL
Offensive Goals
Five main goals that must be achieved to ensure success.
1. No mental mistakes, missed assignments, penalties & turnovers.
2. Score. We want to score every time we have the ball.
3. Control the football (field position and the clock).
4. Pressure the defense with two basic threats - the run and the pass.
5. Spread the defense by attacking the entire field.
This offense will only work if:
1. Everyone is 100% committed to it (coaches and players).
2. We do not accept mediocrity.
3. We must keep it simple & rep constantly (do a few things well).
4. We must get 100% from our players at all times.
5. Our blocking rules allow our linemen to block any front we may see.
a. Block from the snap of the ball to the whistle.
b. Down field blocking must be aggressive and physical.
c. Be aggressive, nasty and relentless.
6. Our backs are dedicated to perfection.
a. The quarterback must have his mechanics drilled to perfection.
b. We must carry out fakes to the extreme (20 yards down field).
Naming the Backs
LEFT WING : A BACK FULL BACK : B BACK RIGHT WING : C BACK
Offensive Line/Hole Numbering
The offensive line will line up as close to the ball as possible. Linemen will get in a
comfortable 3-point stance with very little weight on the down hand. The down hand is the
choice of each linemen and will be a matter of what feels most comfortable. The
tackles and ends will align their hands even with the guard’s down hand. This will give us a
balanced offensive line with no bowing. Base line splits will be toe to toe but will vary throughout
the season to take advantage of defensive weaknesses. Hole numbers will be even on the right
and odd on the left.
Backs Alignment
The B back will line up in a 3 point stance
directly behind the QB by extending his arm so
that his fingers tips just touch the QB’s back
when he is under center.
A & C backs will line up in a 2 point
stance 1 yard wide & 1 yard
deep from the tackle or tight end to
their side on a 45 degree angle.
Motion
Rip Motion - 1/2 speed motion by A Back on a 45 degree angle
Liz Motion - 1/2 speed motion by C Back on a 45 degree angle
Rocket Motion - Full-speed motion by A Back (open step and go) toward the heels of the B back
Lazer Motion - Full-speed motion by C Back (open step and go) toward the heels of the B back

Play Numbering and Terminology
The first number represents where the B back is attacking. If one number called that will
also be the point of attack. The second number is where the far back attacks and will
also be our point of attack. Any word or words following the number(s) will designate the
blocking scheme for the play. In this case we have Tight Rip 66 Super Power. Notice
both backs are attacking at 6. The Super Power call will tell the backside guard and
tackle their assignment on this play which is pulling playside and sealing up inside the
hole.
The Huddle
The center will call for the huddle 2 yards away from the ball. The tight ends will align
opposite of the tackles, the guards opposite of the wingbacks and the center opposite of the
fullback. Everyone in the huddle will hold hands. The two lines will give enough
room for the quarterback to walk through comfortably. When the quarterback arrives with the
play the huddle will open up on the end closest to the sideline. The quarterback will say the play
and cadence once in each direction as he walks back and forth. The
quarterback will then say “TEAM” and the rest of the team will clap their hands and
answer back “BREAK,” as they break the huddle.
Calling the Plays
Plays will be called this way in the huddle unless we are running no huddle:
Motion Play Blocking Scheme
Example: Rip 66 Super Power
Cadence
Our cadence will be: [city name, city name], go, ready (a long ready) and hut:
“Boston… Boston… go - reeeaaaady…hut! ”
The QB will come to the line of scrimmage and make sure everyone is aligned properly. The
QB will then wait for the linemen to make their calls. Once this is finished he begin his cadence.
The A or C back will generally begin their motion on the word “ready” , the QB will say “hut!”
When he wants the ball snapped. The snap will be on the “h” of
“hut”. On a quick cadence the ball will be snapped on the “g” of go.
Linemen:
1. Get in a three-point stance with either hand down
- The down hand is directly in front of the back foot. -
Feet are no wider than shoulder width apart.
- There is very little weight on the down hand.
- Eyes are up and tail is down.
2. Linemen are back off the line of scrimmage (LOS) as much as legally possible
- The rule is top of the helmet must be even with the center’s waist.
- If the ear hole is in line with the hip pad of the center then the guard is usually right on the
money. We have the guards, then tackles, then tight-ends align in that order to stop the
bowing effect.
- We use zero line splits and will adjust if needed.
3. Everything we accomplish as a team begins and is finished up front.
- The backs get the glory, but the linemen win the games.
4. Blocking technique.
- The key is blocking surface and we want to maximize the area provided to us. We want our
blocker’s shoulder, head, and hands on the defender driving him. Never lean into a
defender; keep your center of gravity low and stay under the defender as you drive him
upward. Drive your hips into him so that your body stays under his and your feet constantly
moving towards the defender.
5. Double Team Blocking
- First of two main blocking techniques used on the offensive line.
- Accomplished by the first lineman (post man) blocking the defensive lineman
aligned on him. He will fire out and get the defender lifted, without trying to gain
position. As the defender is posted the adjacent lineman (lead man) will drive his
inside shoulder into the hip of the defender. At this point both linemen will split the
defender in half and work toward pushing him backwards (never sideways).
- Eyes of both linemen are always up and directed at the linebackers. This way they are
capable of handling any alignment , stunt, or blitz.
- Pushing the double team up the field instead of sideways helps open up well
defined blocking lanes while cutting off scraping linebackers.
- It develops lineman team work and camaraderie in our offense.
- Keys to proper double teams are sound engagement technique and good footwork. -
Gives lineman a force advantage
6. Down Blocking
- Second of the two main blocking techniques used by the offensive line. -
Similar to Wing-T down blocking.
- Ensures gap protection.
- Capable of handling any alignment , stunt, or blitz.
- It develops lineman team work and camaraderie in our offense.
- It creates more defined running lanes and allows the use of landmarks to run to. - A
30-degree angle is followed on playside either inward or outward.
- Scramble block on the back side to seal off backside leakage.
- Exploding off the LOS is KEY!
- Sound engagement technique and good footwork.
- Is used with or without pulling and trapping. -
Easy to understand
- Simple to teach
- Simple to implement
- Simple to execute
- Simple to adjust
- Allows your blockers to be more aggressive -
Simple alignment, assignment and execute -
Gives your lineman a force advantage
- Blocking on angles gives the offensive line a force advantage.
- A bigger defense does not have an advantage, size is negated by angles.
- Down blocking angles can turn a 135 pound lineman into a 270 pound lineman. -
Gives linemen a sense of being unstoppable.
6. Super Power
- Backside TE scramble blocks
- Backside Tackle & Backside Guard - pull, seal any leakage and then wall off inside.
7. Super O (only run if backside penetration is disrupting the play)
- Backside TE & Tackle cutoff.
- Backside Guard - pull, sealing any penetration leakage and then wall off inside.
8. Iso
- Backside TE & Tackle cutoff.
- Backside Guard - pull, sealing any penetration leakage and then wall off inside. -
Playside Tackle and TE follow out path (opposite of down block).
9. Counter
- Backside TE scramble blocks
- Backside Tackle - pull, seal any leakage and then wall off inside.
- Backside Guard - pull, seal any leakage, kicking out first threat to show.
10. Trap Block
- Block by backside guard on the first down lineman on/outside playside guard.
- Accomplished by the guard pulling and following a 45 degree path and bending path to
compensate for movement of trap man. Cannot be done wrong if head is in the hole and the
feet accelerate on contact.
- If trap man has his back contact must be made above the knee.
- If trap man disappears then continue path up the field and lead block for the B back.
11. G Block
- Same as trap but playside guard now has the trap block one to two holes wider.
11. Wedge
- Seven on one block with interior linemen pushing on adjacent linemen.
12. Reach Blocking/Pass Blocking/Scramble Blocking
- This block will be accomplished by bringing the far ear of the offensive player to the
outside knee of the defender. Once the target is reached the offensive player will bear
crawl to cutoff the defender. Along with being our backside protection block we will also
use the scramble block on many pass plays and outside runs where we need to reach
block.
Backfield:
1. B-Back (FB) Stance and Alignment
-3-point stance one hand down and same side foot back (numbers on the knees). -
Down hand is directly in front of the back foot.
- Feet are no wider than shoulder width.
- Place little weight on the down hand 50 to 60% of weight on front foot (bend at the
knees and then place the hand down).
- Their eyes are up, tails down.
- Have them get into a four point stance then move foot back and hand down. -
Line up directly behind QB.
- Should be able to almost touch the QB if you stretched your arm out.
-3-point stance, this helps to hide the BB and makes the deception game better.
2. A and C-Back Stance (WB’s) and Alignment
-2-point stance with knees bent.
- Feet shoulder width apart and on line with one another. -
Hands resting on the knees.
- Head and eyes up.
- No forward lean and the heels must be on the ground.
- Angled inward at 45 degrees and looking at the tight end’s outside hip. -
One yard off the LOS and one yard outside of the tight end.
- Do not lean forward.
- Sit into your stance.
3. Quarterback’s Stance
- Feet back as far as possible with arms fully extended to avoid colliding with pulling
linemen.
- Narrow stance with toes pointed in (pigeon toes) to make pivoting easier.
4. Taking a Snap
5. Quarterback Footwork on the Toss
- Quarterback will take a “pigeon step” as he receives the ball from center. The
pigeon step means his playside foot will pivot, toes going in toward the other foot, knee
turning inside, heel outside.
- As he pulls the ball in to his right thigh, his weight is shifted onto the ball of his right foot,
with heel still raised.
- Shoulders turn rapidly toward the motioning wing.
- The toes of his left foot are pointed to the sky as he begins his pivot.
- The quarterback takes a swing step with his left foot with all of the weight on his
right leg. The left foot lands in such a way that the quarterbacks back is completely to the
line of scrimmage and the toes of each foot are pointed toward opposite
sidelines and the left foot actually lands behind the plane of the right foot.
- It is at this point that the quarterback has made his two handed toss to the wing.
- The ball is tossed very gently to the “sweet spot” about 4 yards deep behind the
backside guard/b gap.

M
Right foot jab step toward Left foot swings as ball is Right foot swings over and

Will be turned in as ball is
received.
6. Making a Toss
- Toss the ball like you would “toss a baby.” -
Soft toss with a soft catch
7. Taking a handoff
- Make a pocket using arms and hands
- Ball side arm is parallel to the ground and just above the chest - Ball
side arm is pointed outward towards the handoff location - Palm and
forearm is facing down
- Away side arm is parallel to the ground and just below the belly button -
Away side elbow is point to the opposite side of the handoff
- Palm and forearm is facing upwards
- Ball is place into the midsection and away hand secures it in a 4 point contact -
Palm - forearm - bicep - midsection
- Ball side palm is place in top of it and gives it a 5-point contact for security
8. B-Back Footwork on the G
9. Kickout block on the Toss
- Take an inside banana path and attack the inside shoulder of the DE and kick him
outside.

Offensive Line Drills:
Sled Work
We use the sled to accomplish three things:
1. Develop fast twitch muscle fibers.
2. Develop leg strength.
3. Develop endurance.
Note:
If you do not have access to a sled, nothing beats a good old 12’ x 1’, 2 inches thick plank of wood. Nose to nose,
each player drives the other one back.
1. Fire out, fit the bag with designated shoulder. Drive until whistle (5 seconds), tearing up
grass with free hand. Short, choppy steps with wide base. x2 each shoulder.
2. Drop Drill. It is the same as the above drill, except linemen drive the sled until their legs
give out or they quit. Those left after the whistle blows are the winners.
3. Now we pair into groups by choosing a partner. On the five man sled we put a pair on each
side. They drive until one side has clearly turned the sled. We crown the two
winners for the day. Rarely do we have repeat champions on consecutive days.
Chute Drill
Most important drill for our linemen:
1. Develops quickness on our pulls.
2. Helps us find out who are speedsters are.
3. Helps us work on our seal blocks.
4. Helps us work on counter blocks.
5. When the dip is made through the chute, the speed is increased by 25% or more.

Hoop Drill
Another important drill for our linemen:
1. Helps keep linemen tight to the line when pulling.
2. Forces linemen to follow path for sealing inside.
3. Helps us work on our seal blocks.
4. Helps us work on counter blocks.
5. Great compliment to our chute work.
Double Team Block (Post/Lead)
1. Drill Organization and Procedure:
a. The drill will consist of two offensive linemen and two defenders. One offensive
lineman will be designate the post man and the other the lead man.
b. Post man will fire out and get defender lifted upward.
c. Lead man will aim helmet for defender’s near armpit.
d. Offensive linemen will split the defender and push him backwards, not sideways.
2. Coaching Points:
a. Blocking defender down is counterproductive. We are looking to push defender into
scraping linebackers.
b. Eyes are always up and looking inside to pick up any stunting linebackers.
c. After the post/lead block is completed successfully for several repetitions, different
scenarios will be presented to make sure all defensive reactions are covered.
d. Finally, techniques will be implemented to dissolve the double team when it is not
necessary, such as when there is a physical mismatch in our favor.

Down Block
1. Drill Organization and Procedure:
a. We usually align a defense that we believe we will see during the upcoming game, but
mix it up to cover our bases.
b. Key point is to block area, not man.
c. Feet accelerate on contact and drive their man until the whistle blows.
2. Coaching Points:
a. Players need to understand they are not blocking a man, but an area. If they chase,
gaps are created and the assignment of adjacent linemen can be messed up.
b. If no contact is made after three steps a lineman will work up to linebacker level and
block any linebackers scraping across.
c. Occasionally send a linebacker so linemen never guess who they may be blocking.
Scramble Block
1. Alignment:
a. Align a defender in an outside technique.
2. Drill Command and Procedure:
a. On snap each lineman will execute a reach step at the defender and punch the far
shoulder with the near hand to slow down the defender’s momentum.
b. The second step is a cross-over step as they work their feet toward the defender.
Each lineman will reach their inside arm to the outside thigh of the defender, then
drive their inside leg through the crotch of the defender.
c. Finish off by bear-crawling through the defender.
4. Coaching Points:
a. Emphasize that your players keep their shoulders square to the defender at all times.
b. Keep the hand closed on the momentum stopping punch.
Trap/G Block
1. Alignment:
a. Align defense in the toughest possible alignment to block.
2. Drill Command and Procedure:
a. Pulling guard will take a quick open step at 45 degrees and follow that path through
the block looking to get head inside of the defender.
3. Coaching Points:
a. Always keep it tight. It’s better to trap tight than run by the block.
Stomp Drill
1. Alignment:
a. Offensive linemen line up single file in front of the 12” high agility ropes.
2. Drill Command and Procedure:
a. Each lineman will go through with high knees, one foot at time. Key is hard stomping of
the ground and hard, high lifting of knees. It is also important to pump the arms. This
helps deal with defenders who like to bend the rules and grab legs. It also make sure
that our Wedge cannot be cut and defenders cannot cheat by grabbing ankles.
b. Once the first man has reached the third opening the next player will go.
Cut Drill
1. Alignment:
a. Align offensive linemen in a circle around a heavy self-standing blocking bag.
2. Drill Command and Procedure:
a. On “Go” each lineman will take a running start and execute a cut block on the heavy
block. This drill is fun a great reward after a good week of practice.
b. After four times through linemen do their best acrobatic flip or Superman dive onto the
Port-O-Pit. Winners are judged on creativity and elevation.
c. It’s so much fun the backs are always trying to sneak into the drill.
Play Review
1. Organization:
A. Simple offense vs. defense.
2. Procedure:
A. Huddle.
B. Call the play.
C. Run the play.
D. Make corrections.
3. Coaching points:
A. Do not overlook the small things. Even if it works in practice does not mean it will
work in a game.
B. Call the plays so it appears obvious what you are running. It gives your linemen
confidence that the play will go even when the defense knows the play.
Ten Yard Fight
To be run during team offense:
1. Overload the defense to one side.
2. Put too many defenders out their. We have had more than 20 defenders on defense.
3. Tell the defense the play and the snap count.
4. Offense wins if it gets 3 yards. If you can get 3 yards under these circumstances,
then you can move the ball on anyone.
Offensive Backfield Drills:
Kick Out Block
Procedure: Two lines set up on the inside cones. One side will kick out left, the other
right, alternating each time through. Two backs will align as DE’s, aligning according to
what we will expect that week. On regular cadence the back will attack the DE. First
step will be toward the line, followed by a cross over step, giving the back a perfect kick
out path. DE will use a specific technique that we are expecting from opponent. Back
will attack the inside shoulder of the DE looking to make contact with chest and both
forearms (maximum body surface). Make sure backs drive until whistle.
Seal Block
Procedure: Set up two groups with a Wingback, TE, DE and LB. On cadence have the
TE step inside, DE come across and the LB either sit or fly to the outside. We want the
Wingback to get on a set path and seal inside area. It might be the playside LB, but if he flies
out of there we do not want to chase. Wingback will breakdown at block (we do not
want to run by block).
Cutback Drill
Procedure: Set up five cones (so you can mirror the drill) and a blocking bag inside the
outside cones on a 45 degree angle. Run with a quarterback, fullback and wingback.
Have another wingback line up outside the bag as an aiming point. Everyone run Super
Power normally, except when the wingback gets into the hole he will cut inside when he
reaches the bag. A kickout defender can also be added to give your fullback more
kickout repetitions.
Offensive Combination Drills:
Trap Gauntlet
Procedure: Set up an interior offense with a center, guards, quarterback and fullback.
Set up a defense with two defensive linemen in the A gaps and one linebacker opposite of the
trap. We want the defense in the worst case scenario at all times. On the snap the line blocks
trap. The key here is in the timing between the quarterback and fullback. On the snap the
fullback makes a pocket to take a handoff from the quarterback. The fullback must wait until
the ball is placed in this pocket before attacking the midline. Not waiting will kill the timing and
stuff the play before it has time to develop.
Pre-snap Calls:
1. “DOMINO”: This call can be made by any lineman on the playside or the QB. It will
alert all playside linemen to block down. This call works best against a stunting defense.
2. “60”: Made by the playside tackle on all Power Series plays to alert the TE to double down
with him. The call is made when a defender is located on the tackle and he needs help. The
backside tackle will also make this call so the defense is not tipped off to
which side the ball is being carried.
3. “BLUE”: Made by the playside tackle on the Power Series to alert the TE to go block
the backer. This call is made when the tackle has a defender aligned inside of him, or he knows
he can make a one on one block with the defender aligned on him.
4. “40”: Made by the playside guard on all Power Series plays when he gets a “BLUE” call to
ask the tackle to double down with him. The tackle will make a “T-S” call if he cannot and this
will alert the guard he has a one on one block. If the center hears a “40” call he knows he has
a solo block if there is a defender aligned on him.
5. “EGGS”: Made by the center when he is blocking a defender aligned on him. This alerts
the backside TE to scramble block toward the playside. If the TE gets no call he can release
inside to 2nd or 3rd level.
6. “O-S”: Made by the playside wingback on the Power Down if he needs help blocking his
inside defender. This will alert the TE to double team with him and to let the tackle know he
has a solo block.
