LASERS
Paul Witcover
You may have seen lasers in movies, comic books, or on television. Lasers make a narrow line
of colored light. Unlike the light from a flashlight, laser light can shine over long distances
without spreading out. Lasers have many uses.

Long threads of glass called "optical fibers" allow laser beams to carry telephone
conversations, Internet connections, and other kinds of information.

In factories, lasers cut through steel or help make tiny computer chips. Lasers are important
tools in operations. Doctors use tiny lasers to correct vision and fix people's hearts.

The machine that reads the price of groceries at the supermarket works by laser. So do
stereos and CD players. There are laser pointers, laser printers, even laser cat toys.

EMBEDDED QUESTION
So far, what is this story mostly about?
 -Lasers can do many things.
 -Lasers can make movies better.
-Lasers will be used in the future.

What's funny is that in 1960, when Theodore Maiman built the first laser, nobody knew what
to do with it. Some scientists started making jokes. They called the laser "an invention
