Fringe Benefits for Faculty

Sweet Briar College is pleased to provide a competitive fringe benefits package for administrative staff. The
information provided below is only a brief summary. Additional information concerning employee benefits is
available from our Human Resources Office at (434) 381-6323.


Health Insurance
Health coverage is available through Anthem (Blue Cross/Blue Shield), which includes access to a wide area of
network providers. We offer a preferred-provider network option and a high-deductible health plan option
(with a Health Savings Account). The highest level of benefits is available for those who access care through an
in-network medical provider; however, reduced benefits are available for services by non-network providers.
      The PPO plan also includes prescription drug coverage.
      Vision care is included for those enrolled in the Anthem health plans. The plan allows for annual eye
         examinations, as well as eyeglasses and contact lenses.
Sweet Briar College shares the premiums with employees and employees may elect to cover family members
for additional cost. Coverage begins the first of the month after the start of employment or a qualified family
status change.

Dental Benefits
Employees may enroll in dental coverage through Delta Dental Plan of Virginia, which provides basic and
preventative services. The College pays the full cost for the employee. Family and dependent coverage is also
available. Coverage is available after 90 days' employment.

Flexible Spending Accounts
Employees may choose to save for non-covered medical or dependent care expenses on a pre-tax basis, and
then receive reimbursement for those expenses.

Health Savings Account
For those employees who enroll in the high-deductible health plan, an HSA is available. The College currently
makes a contribution to each employee’s HSA.

Life Insurance
The College offers group life insurance for one times salary, with double indemnity for accidental
death/dismemberment. Coverage is available after 90 days’ employment. The College pays for this benefit.

Long-Term Disability Coverage
In the event of disability, employees are covered for 60% of monthly pay, following a six-month waiting period.
Coverage is offered after 90 days’ employment. The College pays the full cost of this benefit.

Retirement Benefits
Retirement benefits are provided through a 403(b) account, through either ING or TIAA CREF. The plan allows
eligible employees to save on a pre-tax basis, and participation will begin the first of the quarter after
employment. The College contributes 5% of base salary per year, and employees are required to contribute
3%. A wide variety of investment options are available, ranging from conservative to higher risk. Employees
must be age 23 in order to participate.

Supplemental Retirement Benefits
In addition to the basic 403(b) plan (above), employees may elect to enhance their retirement savings by
making additional contributions to a supplemental retirement annuity. Investment options are similar to those
provided through the basic plan.
Medical and Sick Leave
Paid medical leave is earned at the rate of three weeks per year, up to a six-month total accumulation. Medical
leave is intended for short-term illness, and for income continuation during the disability waiting period.

Employee Assistance Program
The College offers a full service Employee Assistance Program, which allows employees and family members to
obtain confidential information, counseling and support on any personal problem or concern. The EAP can
provide assistance on topics such as marital and family concerns, financial problems, drug or alcohol use, or
work-related issues.

Tuition Benefits
Full tuition benefits are available to children or spouses of full-time staff. To be eligible, the child or spouse
must be admitted through the normal admissions procedures, and the employee must have completed a year
of employment. Full-time Sweet Briar employees are eligible to attend classes at no cost, pending
departmental approval, and sufficient space in the class. The College also participates in two Tuition Exchange
Programs with consortium colleges.

Optional Benefits
Additional benefits include Accidental Death Insurance, participation in the Beacon Credit Union, Bookshop and
meal plan discounts, and free use of the College's athletic and exercise facilities.
