Grassroot Prog. - Action Research & the R2D2 ID Model in an LIS Web Site Usability Study reports the results of an action research study to determine usability of a LIS open site. The study, which included students as researcher-participants is informed by the constructivist R2D2 instructional design model. The principles of the R2D2 model support the assumptions of action research by empowering students with roles in the design and development process. Results will be used to improve the quality and usability of the department web site and its related resources.

ERT - The “Three S’s” of Electronic Resource Management: Systems, Standards and Subscriptions Resource Management (ERM) encompasses a variety of practices and services that impact library staff and patrons. In this session, four panelists from the system vendor, subscription agent and academic library communities converge to discuss benefits and challenges of “three S’s” integral to ERM: systems, standards and subscriptions. Specific topics include: (1) Systems – ERM system overview, library staff benefits and patron benefits; (2) Standards – Overview of current standards relevant to ERM and implementation challenges for stakeholders; and (3) Subscriptions – Evolving role of electronic resource subscription services and customer benefits.
his high-level overview is ideal for libraries that might be considering ERM solutions and existing ERM libraries that would benefit with an update on current developments.

Finding the Balance: Kids' Rights, Parental Demands, and Librarian's Role How do librarians achieve harmony between their commitment to strongly advocate for a open person's intellectual freedom rights and their duty to address parental concerns over what a young person reads, views, or checks out? How does this attempt at balance influence a librarian's role in the community? Come hear a panel discussion from those who have grappled with these questions and who have struggled to make different forces in their communities understand the librarian's role in these issues.

ALA - IRC ALA - IRRT Libraries in a Time of War 04:00 pm 05:30 pm Program An examination of libraries in ancient and modern wars offers some insights into the confiscatory mentality of conquerors and the lengths to which librarians and others have gone to protect the written word. With the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict now adopted by the U.S., the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield is involved in training regarding cultural property for deploying military units. The speakers will consider the many issues relating to cultural property protection during armed conflict.

The highly popular forum series is co-sponsored by the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC). The topic and speakers are chosen 60-90 days before the conference based on issues that are most relevant at that time. The next day, the ACRL Scholarly Communications discussion group explores and expands the topics presented at the forum and related issues.

2010-06-27 08:00 am 10:00 am Program Librarians are constantly looking for ways to utilize their limited collection development funds more effectively and efficiently. Arkansas State University’s library makes annual collection development allocations to academic departments using a weighted formula based on various factors including departmental credit hour production, the number of graduates, graduate programs, and the average costs of books and journals. We will describe the factors used, why they were chosen, and how the formula can be modified for a variety of libraries. This session will interest those concerned with the allocation of a library’s financial resources.

Creating value will be highlighted against an environmental scan consisting of a composite library SWOT analysis. This program will demonstrate strategies and solutions in each of the following themes – commitment to institutional effectiveness, assessment, and staff development; productive partnerships and building relationships; strategic planning and information technology; public relations, marketing and fund raising; and cooperation through local, national and international initiatives.

In addition, we will show how a similar sandbox environment can be used for Koha and OS discovery layers.

The MORE portal at http://more.mel.org uses the Collection Workflow Integration System (open source). MORE provides Websites that are aligned to and searchable by Michigan's Grade Level and High School Content Expectations as contained in Michigan's Curriculum Framework. Thinkfinity resources were added to MORE, offering standards-based, grade-specific, lesson plans, online interactive tools, and reference materials. MORE content has been collected, tagged and easily shared, allowing other states, regardless of budget restrictions, to develop a resource portal aligned to standards.

Institutional Repositories in Action: Success Stories from the Federal World While many libraries continue to struggle with the definition, creation, and ongoing development of their institutional repositories, libraries in the federal environment have created successful models that can be adopted by other libraries in academia and elsewhere. Panelists from the three largest U.S. national libraries will present information on how they have successfully created ingestion, cataloging, indexing, access, and preservation methods for content stored within their repositories. They will also discuss the challenges they faced as they created their new repositories.

Dr. Kuhl is internationally recognized for her studies that show how young children learn. Her work has played a major role in demonstrating how early exposure to language alters the brain. It has implications for critical periods in development, for bilingual education and reading readiness, for developmental disabilities involving language, and for research on computer understanding of speech.
