SAMPLE BUDGET WORKSHEET

Start with HIGH PRIORITY EXPENSES first! Only indicate what's "due" or that you plan to pay this month!

HOW TO COMPLETE THIS BUDGET WORKSHEET:
1) Fill out this sheet in pencil, you will probably need to erase at some point.

2) Things you need on hand: copies of all current bills and your most recent 2 months bank statements.

3) Under the Current column, fill in the bills that you pay once a month. Start with the "necessary & unavoidable" expenses.

4) Some bills you pay every 6 months, some you incur only once per year. Use the tips below to figure out how much to input:

4a) If this bill or expense is due this month, put the amount due or that you plan to spend in the current column.

4b) If it is not due this month, write-in the annual or semi-annual amount that you expect to pay, and put 1/12th of

this amount in the current column. Consider putting this amount in savings every month so you'll have

enough "cushion" for when this bill or expense comes due. This way, unexpected expenses don't wreck your budget.

q Medical bills: co-pay, eyeglasses, prescriptions, etc. How much do you expect to pay this month? $________

q Auto expenses: registration tags, oil changes, tune-ups, replace tire(s), car washes, etc. This month? $________

q New clothes: do you shop every 3 months? 6 months? School Clothes for the kids? This month? $________

qGifts: How many birthdays or celebrations do you buy gifts for? How much did you spend last year around the holidays?

How much do you plan to spend this month? $________

q Other Expenses: Do you take trips? How often to you travel in a year? What other expenses do you have coming up? $________

5) Sub-total your expenses in each spending category, then add up the Grand Total. Compare Total Expenses to Net Income.

sIf you have a surplus, great! But do you usually have money left over at the end of the month? If not, make sure amounts are accurate.

sIf you have a shortfall, go back and fine-tune expenses and decide where you'll need to cut back.

Note: For Annual Expenses, consider putting this amount in savings to have on hand when these "extra" expenses come up!

Note: This worksheet is available in Excel version at www.arizonasaves.org. Use it to automatically calculate your expenses.
If you would like to to modify this form, the password is "budget." Be careful of adding or removing rows, as it may affect the auto-calculation mode.
